Hi all,

Currently at Peterborough Show and there is a company here that sells and fits air suspension. Has anyone had it fitted and what advantages are there?

Thanks

Its great and really improves the ride/driving etc BUT do your research as there are a few companies doing it and the cheapest/best isn't necessarily the one at the show.

Results depend on your chassis. Definitely improves the ride quality on Fiat chassis with leaf springs, but improvements are marginal on an Alko chassis with torsion bars.

Air assist suspension can be great to stabilise your motorhome on corners, roundabouts and cross winds. Also can help raise the rear end for ferry ramps etc.

We are on our third moho with rear air fitted by AS Air Suspension in Warrington ... they are not at Peterborough this time but I can highly recommend them for product and service.

Are u thinking of a total air assist with self levelling or just a rear end to improve ride, stability and maybe payload?

We have a couple of fiat ducato chassis and have had rear air assist on both our vans.

The totally transform the fiat chassis. Every thing is better than std fiat

The decrease in roll experienced with the narrower track of the Mercedes chassis when being overtaken is amazing.

A sound recommendation

We’ve had full air suspension on two vans now. One of the big benefits for me is how it eliminated body movement when overtaking or being overtaken by lorries on the motorway. Feels much safer

Getting better month by month.
Does Air Suspension give a lot of the above benefits to a brand new standard chassis or it just for slightly older ones with a few years on the springs?
Mine is only two years old and as yet I do not get very much body roll or suffer greatly in cross winds / Lorry overtakes etc. My back end already has a lot of clearance, so wouldn't want it raised any more. Having said all that, I have no experience of driving anything other than this MH to compare body roll etc too.

@Zigisla IMV you will notice the difference even on your MH ... we had it put on a new MH of a similar size to yours (after 6 months of ownership), it had twin rear-wheel drive so was more stable than most but after we had it put on it was a joy to drive with very, very little sway going round corners or the dreaded French roundabouts with the wrong camber! If we EVER went back to a coachbuilt etc it would be one of the first things we fitted ... hubby's even thinking about putting it on our new PVC!

I'm having Airide fit air assist on the rear axle tomorrow - in the day visitors carpark - hopefully, if we can find each other :cautious: ...

They were doing a pre-book show special, a significant discount to their advertised online prices.
As it is very competitive to the quotes I got by shopping around, I'm happy that it is a real saving (y).

I'm mainly doing it to enable uprating - and SvTech are familiar & happy with the company, so that's good enough for me.

I'm not so sure. I got air suspension fitted to my new Fiat (Alko chassis). I had tried it on another (heavier) vehicle and noticed how smooth the ride was. I drove mine to have full air fitted and compared the rides over the same roads and couldn't detect any difference. Indeed, I was surprised how smooth it ran on the original suspension. I think the suspension starts off fine but deteriorates. Many others had recommended it, so they must have perceived a benefit to say as much. Towing with a long overhang is not particularly comfortable but the levelling feature is nice.

Had full VB air fitted to our 2 year old Carthago A Class.
It didn't make quite as much difference as we had hoped but there were a number of good improvements.
The ride on our potholed UK roads was much improved and the crashing that we used to get from the front when hitting potholes has completely disappeared.
Straight line stability is much better with cross winds and backwash from trucks reduced.
Stability on bends and roundabouts is also better.
The van seems to float over undulations in the road but the suspension is still firm with 80psi in the rear tyres.
Vehicle height can be raised and lowered depending on terrain, lowered when parked and raised to go over rough ground but only at very low speed. Van can also be tilted to speed up grey waste emptying and there is an element of self levelling.
Its an expensive addition but if you intend to keep the van for a good length of time it's well worth considering.

Richard.

There must be some improvement as our Cocker Spaniel is far more settled when traveling now. We had AS air assistance fitted in Warrington because our rear axle was always near its 2000kg limit, it’s now got a 2240kg limit.

Definitely worthwhile fitting VB semi air to my mercedes A class - much reduced roll and feels much safer. Only down side is comfortable cruising at 75+ (if not careful) means reduced fuel economy.
75 mph feels like the old 60, so I use cruise control to keep below 65.
much better when passing/being passed by big trucks or 155mph german audis.
