Everything stays nice and level now I have air assisted suspension fitted but i gather it's an MOT fail if the lights can't be adjusted from the switch. Advice gratefully appreciated.

Thanks for you help with this. I never realised they were hydraulic. Got an electrical swith to the left of the steering wheel.

If they have an electric switch then they can't be the hydraulic ones, the hydraulic ones have a 4 position rotary knob. A quick look at Buycarparts lists all headlights for the boxer platform, 2002 onwards, so model 244, are listed as either for Vehicles with headlight levelling (electric), with or without motor, or simply as a headlight with no reference to any levelling. If you take a look at the article that Jev88 posted you can see the hydraulic adjusters that were fitted to the earlier vehicles, I think Peugeot went to the electric adjusters a few years before Fiat did. Best bet would be to check the back of your headlights to see if you can see if there are any obvious tubes behind the lights, 5th picture. I suspect you have electric adjusters, so the question is is it the motors, is it the switch or is it a fuse.

The check of headlamp levelling devices does not apply to motor caravans. Amended post 2016

Mine has the adjuster to the left of the steering wheel but no connection to the headlights, surely if the headlamp aim is fine when checked for MOT that shouldn't fail?

I've had the obligatory rummage around and have determined that there's a 12v supply to the switch. So now I need to determine if it's the switch or both motor units. Thanks for all the advice, its been a great help.

Found the problem! The pivot shaft for the rotary switch had sheared off therefore no movement of the potentiometer. Superglue has done the trick so far now to try and find a replacement switch.

MOT tester has never looked at or tested my headlight levellers.
I know coz I sit in and do all the brakes / wipers / horn / lights business while he ticks off on his clipboard 👍🏻

I have a 1998 Fiat Ducato recently had its MOT, Inspector stated to me our levellers were not working but still passed it, There seems to be conflicting answers regarding whether or not these come into the MOT or not ? Will have to speak to my garage regarding this, I did read somewhere that the law changed and if its fitted it must work but who knows?

Ours hadn't worked for a few years and had always been passed as the requirement for fitted adjusters to be working didn't apply to Motor Caravans. Last year I was told, by the same tester, that the rules had changed and if fitted they had to work. It was definitely not a case of trying to create work as the garage attached to the MOT bay can't work on Vans and Motorhomes as the doors to their workshops aren't tall enough. As far as I could find on the Gov.uk website was a document updated in 2016 that still said that headlight adjusters were not checked on Motor Caravans.

I asked the guys that look after our fleet of minibuses. Basically if fetted they must work. However he did say if I removed the switch and covered the hole with gaffer tape then obviously there is nothing to test. But I did fix them though.

That why I covered mine, nothing to test.

I’m a bit late on this thread but here goes.
my last van failed it’s mot on its headlight level adjusters not working. Inference from mot tester was like others say “if it’s not there I cant test it” . So returned with adjusters removed/blanked off & passed fine.
our present van, Eura Mobil also has non working level adjusters. I now see from looking at uk gov current mot regs that these rules don’t apply to motor caravans.
mot is not due till April so I’ll see what happens Before blanking off etc.
id be interested To hear what has happened to folk with getting current mot.
