Thanks for that didn't realise it held 5th gear inside coverIt's the gearbox end cover.
Inside it is the 5thgear cog which was added in a sort of satellite compartment on the end of the previous 4 speed box.
Ready made gasket is still readily available, or you can use gasket sealant.

I'll recheck cover definately leaking it looks plastic like the timing belt cover but it is quite wet here at moment so will check later todayIf it is the end cover where fifth gear is housed then the cover itself is steel and there is no gasket, a bead of sealant is used and they almost never leak.

Check for any fine metal particles in the oil and try and inspect the 5th gear and it's syncromech while you're in there.Picture is crap i know very wet here but the black bit is the metal housing for the 5th gear which has leak on joint soon as it stops raining i will remove cover
Apparently 5th gear fails or breaks however you want to put it but yes i will check for damage or metal and then top up with oil but others advise is more than recommended by fiat just got to figure where to top up additional oil probably remove reverse switchCheck for any fine metal particles in the oil and try and inspect the 5th gear and it's syncromech while you're in there.

I thought the gearbox was revised around 2004, reverse position changed on the newer box.Fifth gear doesn't fail on your gearbox, that was the previous generation.
D.
The gearbox was redesigned in 2001 from memory, if reverse is left and up then it's the later box that doesn't suffer fifth gear failures. If reverse is right and down then it's the earlier box that has been known to suffer.

I think my 2003 is the later version then, reverse left and up, so do I still need to put more oil in than the 2litres specified ? I thought 2.7 litres was recemmended. It's on my list of jobs to do when the weather gets a bit better..
TIA
