then you need the chassis number and the gasket and go into a fiat garage and they will have or order one

It's the gearbox end cover.
Inside it is the 5thgear cog which was added in a sort of satellite compartment on the end of the previous 4 speed box.
Ready made gasket is still readily available, or you can use gasket sealant.

If it is the end cover where fifth gear is housed then the cover itself is steel and there is no gasket, a bead of sealant is used and they almost never leak.

:party::party::party::party::party::party::party:
Ok photo enclosed not very good but that is the part that is leaking and as dave said it is metal looks like a gasket on it but maybe it is old sealant hanging loose will remove cover when it stops raining and have a look fair bit of oil on gaiters as well so will have to wash them off as well

Picture is crap i know very wet here but the black bit is the metal housing for the 5th gear which has leak on joint soon as it stops raining i will remove cover
Check for any fine metal particles in the oil and try and inspect the 5th gear and it's syncromech while you're in there.

Apparently 5th gear fails or breaks however you want to put it but yes i will check for damage or metal and then top up with oil but others advise is more than recommended by fiat just got to figure where to top up additional oil probably remove reverse switch

Fifth gear doesn't fail on your gearbox, that was the previous generation.

You refill through the breather on top of the box, there is no level plug. Drain the oil before you remove the cover then when the job is completed refill with the correct amount of the correct oil through the breather.

The gearbox was redesigned in 2001 from memory, if reverse is left and up then it's the later box that doesn't suffer fifth gear failures. If reverse is right and down then it's the earlier box that has been known to suffer.

D.

My Ducato was first registered in UK on 11.04.2003 so may have been with dealers for some time unless it was a customer order and left N+B a while before that. It would undoubtedly have been built by FIAT in 2003.

It has 5th left and forward so is the modified box and VIN ends with 7165373.

I have had the oil level increased from the manual stated quantityto what FIAT advised some time ago, but canot remember the exact quantity.

Yep, early 2001.....although that was the change date for vehicle production. Given that a lot of Fiat based motorhomes sit on chassis cabs that might have been produced by Fiat very many months prior, it is possible that there are some large 2001 and even 2002 first registered fiat based motorhomes turning around with the early rather than later version box.

I think my 2003 is the later version then, reverse left and up, so do I still need to put more oil in than the 2litres specified ? I thought 2.7 litres was recemmended. It's on my list of jobs to do when the weather gets a bit better..
TIA

When I requested our garage (commercial ) to put extra in he agredd - not just for the money.

Another tip that is recommended is that although all gearboxes are 'splash lubricated', that one does not engage 5th till the oil is warm - I usually do not do it until the engine water temp nearly reaches operating temp.

Got 5th gear housing off gasket can be seen which looks good no metal in housing either drained oil off probably lucky if there's 2lts in there so going out to get some oil and gasket sealant to use with seal which looks good.

Can find reverse switch thought breather was close by slightly behind but cant find it where in relation to reverse switch is breather
