20+ but 30+ as a tugger
I have an Avtex 16 inch TV and while the picture is great I'm having problems with the sound - we can't hear it and it needs to be on 100% volume and even then we struggle. Recently it keeps flicking between DVD and TV all on its own. I believe its around 10 years old and rather than spend money on a repair would like to get a new one slightly larger. Avtex don't appear to make an 18inch anymore and their 19 inch is 3 cms too wide to fit in the Hymer TV box. The maximum width we have is 446cm. It needs to be 12 volt and have a built in DVD player. All the ones I can find are too wide - any suggestions?

DVDs are going the same way as VHS I'm afraid. New TVs will play videos file formats straight off a memory stick and you can easily fit 20+ films on each tiny USB stick.

The screen sizes are getting bigger as standard too, our last TV was an 18" Samsung and we'd have bought another 18" if there was one available, but I'm glad we got the 24" now, it doesn't use any more power and has Bluetooth built in (for Ann's earphones)

Perhaps you could re-purpose the tv box and fit a TV bracket somewhere?
Our new one fits just nicely near the door.

Hi Richard n Ann,
Thanks for your thoughts. We don't have a suitable place to fit the tv in another place without a serious re-routing of the various cables and its really neat and convenient with it tucked out of the way in its box. We have a reasonable library of DVD's that we replenish each trip abroad or in tree strewn UK and the sat dish won't lock on. It would be a bind to have to transfer every DVD onto a memory stick. Granted if there isn't an option then maybe that would be the way to go but it would entail a lot of work. As a last resort we could go for the 16 inch again but would really like to get a larger screen

We bought an Avtex TV/DVD back in 2019. Regards the sound I think you’ll struggle to get a decent sound out of such a small TV but a sound bar makes a massive difference. If you get one with blue tooth you can also use it for music.
Our plan was initially the same as yours regards tge dvds but this quickly changed and now we use fire stick to stream movies/tv. Or we pre load movies on iPad and plug that into HDMI or just watch on iPad.
Can’t remember the last time we played a dvd.

TV panel manufacturers tend to all make the same size of panels and I think 18" is not a current "model". 19" being the current "favourite" small panel size.

Just got one of these to replace a set of Logitech speakers that are on their way out. Not tried it yet.
It's got bluetooth and aux connection, built in battery, usb micro charged and can play music usb sticks directly from socket on rear.
Currently on promotion from manufacturer at £30.

Looks like a really good option we have Avtex sound bar which is pretty neat has to be plugged in.
If I was buying again I’d look at one with built in battery👍

It you want good sound quality and your TV is Bluetooth you can get a little Bluetooth cigar socket transmitter, ours plugs in in the cupboard and you tune the van's fm radio to it. You then pair the TV with it and the sound comes out of the van speakers. Our van speakers are fantastic HiFi 👌

☝️ They're about 10 quid.

Also when travelling I pair the phone with it and the navigation instructions lower the music volume and come through the van speakers, there's also a microphone on it for hands free phone calls 🤩

When you get to try the Creative sound bar could report back if you can use it whilst it’s charging.
The one I have makes some horrible noise if you don’t unplug the charge cable, I would like one that can be powered all the time.
cheers

Plugged it into TV at home and, yes, it works fine when permanently "charging".(y) Only tried it with the aux audio connection though and not bluetooth.
seen this one, it is 446 wide 18.5" screen

Funnily enough remembered that one when oot for lunch and was about to flag it up!(y)

Thanks, I would use it plugged in and not Bluetooth, sometimes you get to much lag on Bluetooth

You could blank the existing box with suitable timber then mount a TV on the front.
All the cables etc would be in the box and a small hole would allow them to come out to the TV.
I did exactly this on our RV as the box was just large enough for an old 19/20" CRT TV on the American system.
Modern 24" flat screen fitted nicely

Bought this to replace what seemed to be a faulty TV in the bedroom;

Amazon product ASIN B0849FGHTC
Before I opened the box I discovered that it was a faulty power feed to the current Cello, so it is sat in the unopened box.

However the TV in the living area was also difficult to hear as it has two 10p sized speakers in the rear of the TV which were usless.

The TV had a speaker jack at the rear, I looked at caravan sound bars but considered them too expensive but then noticed that many standard sound bars came with a box that stepped the 240v supply down to 12v, they were a lot cheaper. Bought one, tossed the 240v lead and plugged straight into 12v, perfect volumne.

Thanks for the suggestion. Its not like that though. The box is a shallow one located below the cooking area at foot level and the TV slides up a grooved tube by the side of the entrance door. The connections are inset at the top of the tube. Very neat and tidy arrangement and hidden from view. It looks like it may have been an option on the Hymer Exsis. I'll get a photo to explain better however it looks like Catpirate has found the solution
