Since 2011 (so a bit of a newbie)
We always use the gas to boil the kettle, but I figured now we've got solar energy I'd also get a 12v kettle so as to conserve the gas when we are off grid.

I know they take a while to boil, but we're usually not in a rush.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Electric kettles use lots of power whether they are 12v or mains, the power rating determines the amps, and sadly it's high from a 12v source 😔

Use gas 😊

Had one once, it broke after 2 uses and took hours.

I won’t buy another. They all tend to be very cheap quality and really not that good.

use gas boil kettle and then make flask at same time I got one of these from TKMAXX about £16.00 more that earned back the investment

I've not done the calculation, but suspect that the saving is pretty small, and smaller still if using LPG.
The weight of an extra kettle could even cost as much, to carry around as extra payload, in expensive diesel.

We ve got a 600watts one, it take 5 minutes to boil enough for 2 mugs. I use it all the time. I see several benefits: It takes less room because I can leave the hob glass cover down, it doesnt warm the motorhome up in hot weather, if you have a quick coffee stop you dont have to wait for it all to cool down before going on and it turns itself off when boiled - this is a real benefit when you re in the habit of turning it on and walking away....

Ours is a campa one, its ok but wouldnt mind a better quality one if anyone has any recommendations.

I would love to se this one, a 600w 12v kettle. Maybe is a 230v?

We have a small kettle to use with the inverter It’s not 12v but doesn’t use much power 600-650watt, really handy
Just enough for 2 cups.

Used to have one of what we called 'dipsticks' to boil a cup/mug of water... even on 110v in US, took so long you could go to the bar for a couple of swift ones before your water boiled... waste of space.

If you run out of gas or if there is a problem with the gas Geoff, kettle is tiny so doesn’t take up any room, really handy.

No gas? Bad management: even on a Greek island where the MH is now, with no LPG station and near empty refillable, we have the back-up of a full Calor 11kg for the 2 weeks when we are back there before reaching the mainland to top-up with LPG.

Anyway we are never on EHU for electric, except now to keep batteries and fridge going while we are away.

We are quite independent MHomers.

Do you use gas on the moors? If so, presumably in large or small tanks?

Heating oil we have Geoff up here.

What if the regulator breaks or there is a fault always nice to have a back up especially with it being so small.

Well that is one of the 'dangers' of wildcamping - we might have to drive to a village for a coffee, or go without.

If it happens for the first time in 12 years I will not cry about it too much. I think you would not either. ;) :giggle:

I don't think so as it would draw 50 amps at 12v so would need a very thick power lead.

EDIT
:blush:Ah, I've just read in a later post that it's a 240v kettle.

ANYTHING which produces heat from 12v is a waste of time and battery power.
I don't understand how using the battery power you have stored from solar is a waste of power, surely the waste is not using it.

And as far as kettles are concerned direct 12v a waste of time, indirect 12v ie from inverter "brilliant" (y)

A 600W kettle will take five times longer to boil a litre of water than a 3kW one, probably a bit longer due to the loss of some heat during that extra time. They are not more economical, they require at least as much energy as a conventional kettle to boil the same amount of water.
A 600W kettle (12V or 230V) will take a lot of current from a battery bank, very quickly, and that kind of consumption does them no favour. In an 'emergency' I'd go and gather some kindling wood rather than risk damaging my batteries.

We use a low power mains kettle off an inverter, great to use when on the tunnel!

If you insulate the kettle it will probably boil faster. I saw a vacuum flask kettle a few months ago, brilliant idea 🤩 but Ann didn't like the look of it 🙄

Thinking outside the box 🤔 why don't you insulate a cup and drop this bad lad in it 👇😎

A sorry didnt read the title properly, assumed the OP had an inverter, yes 600 watts at 230 volts, still a lot better than a gas one IMO.
I ha e a Kampa collapsible mains kettle. Brilliant price of kit.

Why a 'kettle' which needs extra storage space?

We just use a small saucepan to boil water. On gas.

Geoff
I've tried a saucepan in the past but the water always tastes different to using a kettle (nothing to do with the pan's previous contents!), so I'll stick with my kettle - as I use it for boiling water to wash up at least it earns it's storage space.

Not necessarily, after I make the drinks I put some cold water in the kettle and swish it round, it soon cools it down so it can go back in it's cupboard before we've even drunk our coffee, it also has the benefit that the water is slightly warmed ready for the next cuppa and doesn't take as long to boil.

Good idea, there are times when I don't have time to boil a gas kettle if we are loaded quickly so using our travel kettle & inverter would be a good alternative ... when I need a cuppa I NEED IT! :giggle:
