We're going to try the expensive and I think impossible! Can anyone help with information for any campsites around London, with easy transport links into London centre - and I won't need a bank loan for? Apps Farm at Walton on Thames is the only one im aware of.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....

So long as you don't object to "the Clubs", there are 4 which I've used:

From Dorset I'd consider CCC Walton on Thames - right by the river, bus stops nearby, approx £7 taxi to station (to Waterloo, I think).

Further in (don't forget LEZ rules) is CMC Crystal Palace - views over the park, bus into Victoria area, 10min walk to station for Clapham Junction/Waterloo/Victoria (or Overground via Earl's Court).

Further still is CMC Abbey Woods - heavily wooded, nice hills, train into Waterloo/London Bridge/Charing Cross is a 10min walk.

Possibly not the best is CMC Commons Wood at Hatfield - flat, some trees, 5min walk, bus to Welwyn Garden or Hatfield station into King's Cross.

We have stayed at the Crystal Palace site a few times, sadly it's closing this year. The number 3 bus goes right to Trafalgar Square. It takes at least an hour but is only £1.50 each way. We didnt use the train as it was further to walk, dearer and didn't end up being quicker. Daughter lives at the Oval and son at Elephant and Castle so ideal. As you can see we're also from Sherborne.

Or there’s Lee Valley campsite in North London. Transport links into central London are good. It’s run by the Lee Valley Regioal Park, so you don’t have to be a member of either the C&MC or C&CC. Nice walks along the River Lee, canal boats to look at and the Olympic White Water Centre.

Depends on what you call 'near London'. Near Bedford, Henlow Bridge Lakes is a nice site, right next to Arlesey Station. Direct train to Kings Cross. Bring your fishing rod.

Would the emission zone cause him any problems, not knowing how old his van is.

Abbey wood and Crystal palace, both CMH club sites. (C Pal closing December) We just stayed at Abbey wood. Nice site, good train service into London bridge and Charing X stations. Cost us £44 for 2 nights. Pitch and 2 adults. NB Both inside LEZ.

I've compiled the suggestions from this and a few other threads and have put together the following notes.

Campsites outside LEZ

Lee Valley Campsite, Sewardstone. Not affiliated with any club. Northeast of London. 2 min walk to bus station. Bus then Victoria line to King's Cross, 1 h 5 min total, £4.20 off-peak. Closed in February, but open rest of the year. I've stayed a few nights here and like it. Reception is willing to accept parcels.

C&CC Theobalds Park. North of London. 27 min walk or £6 Uber to Turkey St station. 32 min Overground to Liverpool St, £3.10 off-peak, £5.10 peak.

C&CC Hertford. North of London. 23 min walk or £5 Uber to Hertford East. 49 min train to Liverpool St, £8.60 off-peak, £11.20 peak (fare zone B). Hertford North £6 Uber or 36 min walk, National Rail £9-12 super off peak same day return. Other times may be more than from Hertford East. £21.25/night Jan 31. I've stayed a few nights here and like it. Reception officially doesn't want to accept parcels—may be true of all C&CC owned sites.

Henlow Bridge Lakes. Not affiliated with any club. North of London. 14 min walk to Arlesey station. 39 min train to St Pancras. £24.5/night Jan 31

Debden House Campsite. NE of London. Closed in winter. 25th May - Sunday 2nd September 2018. 2019 may be different.

C&CC Chertsey. SW of London. Open year round. £9.10 to £15.25. 22 min walk from Chertsey station. 1 h 6 min train to Waterloo

C&CC Horsley. SW of London. £7.60 to £12.85. Closed for winter. Open: 01/04/2019 - 04/11/2019. 22 min walk to Horsley station. 45 min train to Waterloo. Outside of M25 and LEZ.

Willow Tree Farm. SW of London. Open from Mid March to end of October

CMC Hoe Farm. SW of London. From £20.

Laleham Camping Club. SW of London. Closed for winter.

C&CC Walton-on-Thames. SW of London. No toilet or showers. £5.45 to £9.10. Open: 01 Apr 2019 - 04 Nov 2019. 43 min walk to Walton-on-Thames station, 10 min taxi. 25 min train to Waterloo.

CMC Wyatts Covert. West of London. From £20.70. 35 min walk to Denham Golf Club station. 32 min train to Marylebone.

California Chalet. West of London. £25-30

North Hill Farm. Not affiliated with any club. NW of London. 25 min walk to Chorleywood station. 27 min train to Marylebone.

I'd recomend Horsley C&CC site. It's fairly easily accessible as its not far off the A3 (From Sherbourn come up the A31 to the A3, exit at Ripley).
A one day travel card to Waterloo is around the £22 mark (off peak). Guildford is at the other end of the line (3 stops) well worth a visit. Ripley has a Farmers Market on the 2nd Saturday of every month.
If your into fishing the Carp in the lake at Horsley used to throw themselves at the bait, at least when my son went fishing there.

We have stayed at Abbey Wood several times and it works very well for us. The train service into London is frequent and reasonably priced with an Oyster card. Nice Indian restaurant near the station and also a cafe that does good breakfasts (y)

Abbey Wood is inside LEZ—for those that have a problem with that.

We've often used Aldborough Hall CL. About 10 minutes walk from Newbury Park tube station, on the central line
