Has anybody used the cheap, magnetic gas level indicators they sell on eBay for a couple of quid?
There are very mixed reviews on these things so I’m very confused. What so you do to check your gas level? I have a 2 bottle Gaslow system.

TIA
John.

Used to have the magnetic things. Totally useless really. Or maybe it was me that couldn't see them properly.
I have the Autogas bottle system and they have a gauge on each one.

(I'll probably get into trouble now because I called them bottles :))

I tried one years ago John and found it absolute rubbish and of course won't adhere if you have aluminium bottles.
My way is to keep one full bottle turned off until the first one is empty and then just fill up a few days later when next passing a lpg supplier.

That's what I tend to do.

Me too... but these idicators aren’t too bad..
when it hits the bottom of the red... there’s still a fews days-worth of LPG... my guess 2 to 3 litres...

Showing just on empty....

Pick it up and shake it. If nothing is sloshing about it is either completely full or completely empty. If something is sloshing about, you get a feel for how much is there

I let 1 bottle empty swop over to other bottle and top gas when i find somewhere never even look at level unless turning on or off

Best 100% level indicator
Turn one bottle off then you know you have 50% left turn on 2nd bottle and time to top up next time out.
if you run both bottles together or with auto switch, you are planning your own demise

I'm a smarmy git, as we have an under-slung tank and a nice LED readout of the gas level at the press of a button. (y)
Me too - except the gauge is just as inaccurate as all the rest ...
Red LED comes on suggesting empty - but it still half full

Yup, ours too, but when we first filled the tank we noted how much had gone in as each led lit up so we can better gauge usage and when to top up.

Auto changeover can be a pain it can empty both bottles if you dont check - far prefer manual set up open other bottle when 1 empty but defeats purpose of auto-changeover.

I've got a 6kg and 11kg set up worst case scenario 6kg lasts 4 days 11kg lasts 7 days so always have a couple of days to source gas

I use a cheap, fiver? infrared thermometer. As long as gas is being used there is a small temp difference around the level of the liquid lpg. No need for accuracy, just need to see that difference. Also can check tyre temps....
No good if there is no gas being used as no temp difference as the vapour is not "boiling off" the liquid.

Ours is auto changeover but I don't use it. When the first bottle empties you know roughly how long you've got left as long as your usage is steady.

The last time I left a site to go and fill up we had about 1/2 a litre left

Useless,,,Instead of a change over i have two bottles both with the simple old fashioned regulators fitted which supply the van through a T piece,,When one is empty i just shut the valve on the bottle and open up the other one..No messing about with a spanner in the dark. BUSBY.

Call me old fashioned when I want to check gas level I just weigh the cylinder on bathroom scales

It may be 100% reliable but the problem with that method is that Sod’s law says the bottle will run out in the middle of the night and the beer will get warm in the fridge or just as you’re cooking supper and it’s peeing with rain.
I prefer to use the auto changeover and just keep an eye on it. You have a good idea how long the gas is likely to last in one bottle so it’s just a matter of remembering to have a look at the changeover indicator to see that the colour has changed.

Richard.

No problem with an auto changeover providing you have the "C Remote" Green led on the controller inside the van goes out and red led comes on telling you it has switched from primary to reserve bottle.

Weighing ours would be a right ball ache, having to disconnect the filler inlet, the standard outlet and then unstrap it. All twice

I do not need to disconnect from van I put scales on small folding stool and pipe is long enough to reach. I have also done a check on usage which is proving to be accurate and van uses .66kg per day when wild camping the high usage being the fridge freezer.
