D mostt funsters turn off their fridges when they use this ferry service or do mthey risk leaving them on gas

you are meant to turn your gas off while on the ferry ,you can if you ask get ehu.
i just get mine very cold on way to port and usually its cold enough to be ok.

We asked for ehu when on last year's ferry to Santander.

As Alan says, just make sure it is nice and cold and I suggest comfortably full. We put a frozen lasagna in our ours to eat on the first night after we arrived and it was still partially frozen when we drove off the ship. I wouldn't bother with faffing about with EHU cables, just not necessary.

We were told point blank no ehu. Maybe they only have so many or depends where you are positioned on ship? Just have freezer packed, frozen milk, juice, whatever. Put frozen bottled water in fridge so keeps fridge cold. If you don't open your fridge should be ok. Ours was.

If you want EHU you need to advise in advance so they position you in the area where they are available, normally for the trucks.

I have had EHU every time ( about 5 times) and never told them in advance.

Just produce your cable and give them a blank look.

If you take Sunday evening ferry, to arrive Tuesday morning, I wouldn't want to risk my food defrosting.
If you ask beforehand, they should be able to put you on hook up, you may need french 2 pin plug, but it's no problem. I've always found them very helpful.

Yes we have always had the French adaptor.

The guys loading the vehicles have always been really friendly and helpful.

Not being alarmist.. unless you have an anti surge device, probably better without using the ship's supply.
The ship's generator may give a surge .. or spike.. and fry the van electrics ..
