Yorkshire Dales roads

We are going up to the Yorkshire Dales in September in our MH which is 7.6 metres. Are there any roads best avoided? For example the Buttertubs pass, or the B6270 - advice would be very welcome

None,certainly none that you are ever likely to go on, there are definitely roads that become narrow over relatively small distances but everyone takes these slowly and manage to pass each other but they are few and far between.
I have taken my 9m MH throughout the Dales no problem.

It’s not Devon it’s far better it has to be its Yorkshire enjoy it you are in for a treat and if you get the Sun you’ll love it.

Ha! Nowhere is better than Devon - but we rarely use our motor home for long touring trips in our county or Cornwall for that matter! Thank you for the advice

Buttertubs is fine but not the other 2 roads which go north and northwest from Askrigg over to Gunnerside and Reeth. There a few roads in the Dales with some fairly steep climbs but they are generally on very minor roads eg. south from Dent but all the yellow roads on the AA maps for example should be fine. As @Littlewheels says, most are fine with care - if in doubt about a route just ask a local.

Just on the Western edge of the Dales is a section of the A684 road (see map below) that I am not too keen on driving in the MH, It is quite narrow but there are a lot of 'blind bends' on it and very easy to meet someone in the middle of the road. I think the Caravan & Motorhome Club warn about it in their route to their site at Leyburn.

If we travel that way from Yorkshire, we turn right just before Garsdale Head and follow the B6259 to Kirkby Stephen which is a lovely, much more open run and follows the Settle - Carlisle Line for a while. We often drive down that way just to have lunch in the van for the day.

To be fair though it is an A road and is used by much bigger vehicles than a motorhome. Just need to take it steadily with the usual care. We have been on some very narrow A roads in Devon and Cornwall but wouldn't let that put us off going again. We generally take the view whether here or abroad that if a refuse lorry can use a road so can we!

Have you bought your emissions sticker, they will stop you on the border if you don’t have one.

some of the roads heading north / south can be a little narrow, the roads in Swaledale I find the most challenging

If you are tempted by Tan Hill Inn, which I have always found very disappointing apart from the view, the only way I would suggest you try is from Reeth, definitely don't try the road in from Keld especially if you are front wheel drive

the roads are generally quite quiet, apart from maybe in the east around Leyburn and the run into Hawes from there

parking is not easy in a MH BTW, but doable if confident

No, you need to see it all, it's wonderful. And the Tan Hill is under new management and will let you stay overnight if you wish. Worth going there.
