MH newbie but we owned a caravan previously.
Right you seasoned travellers. We are now in the lucky position of being retired and we're considering an extended trip through France, Germany and Spain (and anywhere else that takes our fancy) later this year. Setting a departure date is easy enough but we want to return as and when we feel like it. Is it a case of buying single tickets or are there other options? TIA

Only problem is your travel insurance will not be valid, best way out of it is book a return for round about when you are thinking of coming back then change it nearer the time won't cost anymore.

Always buy singles, we never fix a return date. Not a problem with our Ins provider. as long as we are within the prescribed parameters.

As Martin says, check your travel insurance doesn’t insist, and just book one way (it’s what we do)

If travel insurance do insist on a return being booked, buy a ticket that lets you change and adjust as necessary during your trip (y)

Thanks peeps. Will check our insurance and buy tickets accordingly.

As above. We always booked singles then someone mentioned to check travel insurance. There it was in the small print, a return trip needed to be booked. Something I now check for.

This comes up everytime this question is asked. I've checked and checked the van and travel insure don't mind. But there again I do have a frequent traveller ticket on the tunnel so I do have a ticket, just don't have a crossing booked.

Pluck a date near a day when you may come back. It’s only a few minutes job to change it, online or telephone.

If you have a frequent traveler, just book a return and go online and amend nearer the time, no charge and easy to do.

I'd heard this mentioned many times so I asked my insurance company and they had never heard of it and just replied that you are insured for the entire period of you stay abroad with or without return tickets. Other insurance companies may be different so check with them. I think it mainly applies to backpackers who head off to Asia with just single tickets and not always the guarantee that they'll have the funds to return much later.

Just out of interest has anyone actually had an insurance claim refused because they didn’t have a return crossing booked ? How do all the Dutch , Germans etc who spend most of the winter holidaying in Spain go on with insurance...........no return channel crossing to identify their return date?

When we purchased breakdown cover for our son, they would not cover him on a one way ticket it had to be on a return ticket. Also watch the time you are away as it might fall into the 90 days in 180 rule.

We always book return trip because it seems to be cheaper to book it and then change it at a later date if you don't intend returning on that date.

People living and travelling within the Schengen zone can travel freely with no necessity for border checks. Our French vehicle insurance covers us for travel within the whole of Europe and the Schengen zone including Russia without having to ask for additional cover, so there is no need to tell insurers where or when we are travelling or when we will return. I would imagine the Dutch, Germans etc enjoy the same insurance cover as we do.
So, it’s a just a UK thing.

Yes instead of leaving eu the uk should have joined shengen ....increase freedom instead of restricting it

But that's too modern thinking

Thanks for sorting the Schengen zone/ insurance bit.?
I’m still interested to know if anyone has had an insurance claim turned down because they hadn’t booked a return ticket.

Probably a good date to book would be 31st March 2021 just in case :)

So do you think the French will see it as the 31st of march and disregard if you've been in shengen longer than 90 days?

Genuine question as I'm not sure if they will or not.

I think if they want to they could still penalise folk if they have been there more than that.

For instance if I head to europe mid september but stay till the end of march I'll still have overstayed the 90days

I'm hoping they don't but unfortunately no one knows till then.

Still unsure where Croatia stands as they dont seem to have joined shengen yet despite the talk of them doing that last year

Unless I've missed it

The 90 days will not start untill the end of the "transition" as up until then it was not accruable in Shengen or elsewhere in EU . JMHO

We bought an annual travel insurance policy from Saga Insurance, and we've checked with Saga and for the Annual Policy, you don't have to have a return crossing booked - as long as you don't exceed the maximum trip length.
