So we’re on our maiden trip and all all is going well.

One if the things that isn’t working is out Saytnav. It’s a Kenwood DNX5260BT with Garmin Satnav built in.

Problems are:-

- The maps are way out of date (I’ve looked on the Kenwood website and the newest one they offer for it is 2014) so keeps trying to send us the wrong way down one way streets etc.

- Doesn’t seem to route for Motorhomes so we keep getting sent down stupidly narrow roads - which I’m sure are the most direct but make driving very stressful. I’ve looked in all the menus and have found one setting for motorhome - but it’s in the ‘view’ menu and only seems to change the vehicle avatar that shows your colurrent position.

- No choice to avoid toll roads/select ‘cheapest route’ in the route options so constantly trying to send us onto paeage motorways which we have to avoid (since our tag axle makes us class 4 and tolls really pricey)

So a couple of questions:-

1) Does anyone else have the same system and so know if it can be updated to do the things above?

2) If we can’t get it to work we’ll enough, what’s the best option out there that will give us all of the above functionality?

Thanks a lot.

Chris

Google maps on your phone, no competition (y) (y)
I don’t think that does motorhome specific routing or avoiding tolls - or am I missing something?

Buy a stand-alone system (Garmin/TomTom/cheap Chinese) or use an app on a tablet/phone.

I have TT 6200 which allows me to set length/width/height/weight and I guess it's 98% accurate. However, I've got plenty of complaints about it.

Does it have a memory card in it if so I would think you could update that with Garmin on your computer.

I couldnt agree more although i think a tablet is better because of the larger screen.

You can set it to avoid tolls, ferries and Motorways.

You can't set it for size although IMHO A bit of planning using your eyes and common sense are much better than blindly following a satnav.

This is the best route planning map for France IMHO and it shows toll and non toll roads. This post has reminded me to order a new 2019 version as France keep building new roads so my 2014 is out of date and a bit dogeared.

I just bought a AVTEX GARMIN TOURER ONE PLUS , about £360 , I would not buy a gramin again
It has lots of good features but I find I have to run a TomTom at the same time because the detail at roundabouts/ junctions can be very poor , the Tom Tom detail is miles better IMO

You should have got the 770 LMT-D camper it’s for Motorhomes and you can input dimensions.?

It is a motorhome/caravan gps and all dimensions are imputable, I think they may both use the same
garmin maps/software

Hi
We had a similar kenwood unit in our last MH. There were free up dates but it was a pain in thd arse to do it. It would only update to northern Europe. Many many emails back and forth to Garmin. Eventually sorted after they told me to update firmware /software of the unit first. Them maps updated.

I have a satnav but have learned to also take notice of road signs and sometimes ignore the satnav.....
I find planning a route helps rather than just depend on the satnav - Google maps for instance might show road closures...

If you re really keen you could get one of these

Yes google maps show realtime traffic delays. Garmin Traffic is useless.

Ebay Chinese they have faults but stop a journey from getting boring.
Thanks. Can you point me to any particular model you have experience of? Does it have functions to avoid tolls and roads too small for a Moho?

Use the thing that is sat in the passenger seat :D

I have bought a Floureon 710 sat nav £31 I will be using it on Monday it has all the bells and whistles height width length weight and dangerous loads worth a look. If yours it so far out of day. Oh yes lifetime free map updates.

Is that the motorhome version & how much does it cost ?
I have this one

Not sure of price had it a while. I have a 5t 8.2mtr tag axle and works fine. My last trip I ran Google alongside on phone also. Not much in it tbh

I love my Garmin, was £80 from Halfords 6 months ago
Its a “car” one and I use it as an aid to my £1.99 AA map
I don't ever use it as a “crutch” that I rely on totally.
IMO too many have forgotten their common sense and spend hundreds on a “motorhome specific” piece if kit , blindly follow it, and blame it for letting them down ?

I would have thought that once off main roads, all satnavs will ignore dimensions in order to get you to chosen campsite / aire/ town parking. Here where you need experience and gut feeling. If it looks wrong don’t go down it !

I agree with the above. I also think that it’s useful to know that if a bus, coach, lorry, delivery vehicle, etc can get down a road, then so can you.

By the way... how are you? Have the injuries to your face healed now?
