Windscreen chip

As long as it is not in line of sight you will be ok. Just watch if it starts turning into a crack get it done.

Hope that it’s fully covered on your insurance 🤞

Personally I’d get it repaired to minimise the likelihood of it spreading. Most auto glass services should be able to do it. cant see why the height would be an issue, do you have a platform? Most will come to your home to do it.

Get it repaired by an independent guy, the National companies are in the business of selling screens and might try and “persuade” you to have a new screen. In my view replacement should be avoided whenever possible, as one little slip with a tool that penetrates a painted surface in time results in rust.

A local independent came to ours and only charged £25.00, whereas after 1 x repair by Autoglass, they would only replace rather than repair again. Shysters. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Got a couple of chios repaired on my A Class through the insurance no charge. National Windscreens came out and filled the chips no problems.

Definitely get it repaired before it costs thousands. I've had 2 chips successfully repaired. The first one was in 2014 and its still holding.

It always seems like that will be one of the biggest payouts, hopefully not to happen 🤞 but reading replies on here, like always, there is a solution and by the sounds of it, a lot cheaper than I would of thought.

I am currently having auto glass ordering a new screen for my A Class….I have a large chip right in my line of sight. They assessed it to need replacing….they will come to mine to replace with a team rather than just 1 person. Thankfully I searched for a policy that had unlimited windscreen cover (AXA) so should be covered…..

Yes i have cover. Its high up not in my sight. Thanks all for info.

I had a large chip repaired in 2020 and a few months later it developed into a crack and the screen was replaced. As a result my insurance history shows 2 windscreen claims for one chip!

The learning is think twice before agreeing to the repair of a large chip.

If the chip is within 290mm of the centreline of the steering wheel and in the swept path of the wipers any repair needs to be virtually undetectable if the MOT tester is having a bad day.

I wouldn’t involve the insurance to repair a chip I would just pay for it.
For what it costs to repair a chip (£20- £30) quid it’s not worth making a claim!

Especially as they load the policy for all claims these days , I'm surprised they haven't taken glass cover off the policy given the price of some screens
You might command a low premium because you're unlikely to crash but there's nothing you can do about broken glass that might be £1500 to fix

Windscreen claims have no impact on insurance, having had 2 screens replaced in 3 years, and another one soon I can confirm that.

Small ones I do myself, with a kit for around a tenner, basically it seals the surface to stops moisture getting into the lamination, done about 10 always worked for me.

Depends who you insure with , I've been asked by a broker if I've had any claims in the last 5 years including glass claims before so some count it
Most don't load the policy if you've been on a speed awareness course but admiral ask the question so they do

Some insurers only want no claims no points customers

We picked up one the other day low down on the right as you look from inside. Its a star shap at the moment. Autoglass came out and said its too close to the edge to be repaired but can be left as it is. I am keeping an eye on it and so far it has stayed the same on some bone crunching roads. I suggested I might try a repair kit but he said the pressure when you apply it may make it worse.

Just remember if having it filled your windscreen may crack and replacements take time on a class so do when you are not using it

You still need to declare it, but glass claims should have no effect on premiums.

In order to ensure absolute stability of the repair you need to get it done ideally before any moisture can enter the damage. Removing moisture is very difficult and generally if the repair falters this is the reason.
