JeanLuc is right,'Winchcombe' is quite a long way from anywhere, you will need some form of transport if you want to visit any towns/villages. However, the walking is good.
Thanks for the replies. Not intending to travel around, the walking is good enough for us and we also just want to chill out. As long as we can walk in to a nearby village (Alderton or Grassington) with a dog friendly pub we are good to go.
The staff at Winchcombe C&CC have always been friendly and helpful when I've been there (last visit was in May). Traffic noise is a problem if you pitch near the front of the site, or end up using the arrival-after-11pm car park . Shame, because the grass area at the front is good if you don't want to be pitched right next to someone - everyone seems to want/need hard-standing and EHU nowadays.
Winchcombe is a lovely site but a bit far from anywhere. Take your fishing rod as there is a large lake there. If you like steam railways, there is one just down the road about 3 miles away and it runs to Cheltenham racecourse!
Stayed at Winchcombe site. Picturesque with ducks and moorhens walking round the site looking for handouts. Nice fishing lake. Dog walk and also a field a short walk away that you can let your dog run in. Some good walks away from the roads. Buses are infrequent so if you take the hus into say Tewkesbury and you miss the one and only bus back......it'll be a long, long walk!
Fish and chip van visits I think twice a week. Staff were really friendly, seem to remember amazing flower arrangements in ladies shower block. Oh and the site shop was well stocked too.
Stayed at Wharfedale site a couple of times.
It's about a mile and a bit to Grassington (slightly uphill on return walk)
Grassington has a few pubs, cafes and some nice shops.
If you go the other way out of the main entrance, there's Kilnsey Crag - a big rock/cliff which is right next to the road. Impressive to watch the rock climbers on it.
There's also a fishing lake and a farm shop there.
Continue past here is another pub (not walking distance from the site though).
There's a typical village petrol station on outskirts of Grassington which also sells gas cylinders/refills although expect to pay top brass.
I think that you can use the leisure facilities of next doors Long Ashes (pool, sauna etc) although we didn't so can't confirm this.
Skipton is nearest town and is worth a visit. Bolton Abbey is nearby and there's a steam train and Billy Bobs diner (all a short drive away) which are all worth visiting if you get chance.
Slightly further afield is ilkley which is nice.
Let me know if you need further info. We are approx 20miles from there so have a decent idea of the area.
Not been to Winchcombe site so can't help with that one.
