We are due to travel to the Far East and as 3 mobile charges are very expensive, is the following plausible..

WiFi calling, will we need to use a VPN?

Will Wifi calling work?

Intention is to buy a sim in Thailand for mifi,,

Cost in Thailand.
Cost.
Calling a UK number.£2 per minute.
Calling a Thai number.£2 per minute.
Texts to UK.35p per text.
Texting a Thai number.35p per text.
Receiving calls from any number.£1.25 per minute.
Receiving texts from any number.Free.
Using internet and data.£3 per MB.
Using voicemail.£2 per minute.

You do not need a VPN for Wifi Calling, just wifi. I typically just use Whatsapp as everyone I want to call is on there from a wifi connection.

You could also look for a sim here before you go that meets your needs. A quick google throws up this at £20 month with free international roaming and calling plus 30GB data, granted I've not studied all the T&C's

That's soon going to cost a bomb!.

I used WhatsApp to ring a land-line, as the number wasn't a WhatsApp contact, it triggered a charge..
Is there a some software that allows WiFi calling to a land-line.

You can't call landlines via WhatsApp without incurring charges

I used WhatsApp to dial an uk landline, using WiFi I thought, it used my carried and triggered a charge.
That'll be because it's outside the WhatsApp network....landline can't use WhatsApp.
Possibly applies to non WhatsApp mobile numbers as well.
In other words, if both phones aren't on WhatsApp you pay for calls.

So obvious thing would be just use your mobile if you’ve got minutes on your mobile plan.

If not try looking up the TalkU app on your App Store. Can’t remember if the service you want is totally free or maybe you will need a cheap credit package. They offered both rolling monthly plans but also one off credit packages and you buy another when used. Not free but may fulfil your need at a small cost.

With Skype you can add credit like a payg phone and dial landline or mobile numbers, I haven't used it like that for a while but costs were always very reasonable.
I have just found this.

Skype out is what I would use. Not sure if it is still called that. But as Widge said dirt cheap last time I used it.
