Hi Folks,

So, taking your helpful advice (thanks all), van is going in for cambelt & 2 tyres on the front.

I have read various Tyre related threads but most were not recent, so raising it again at risk of boring you all.

I was tending towards the Toyo Observe Van, but then read "but you need to fit them to all 4 wheels as they are a winter tyre".

What would you recommend pls ?

Also:
> I have read about 6/8/10 ply tyres. Is it the ply rating which defines the CP (camping) grade of tyre ?

> I saw references to load rating 112 /114/118 etc. People have mentioned moving to a different load rating.
Does that mean that same model tyres are available in different load rating categories, or did they mean moving to a completely different tyre ?

This motorhoming lark is making my brain hurt,
and its only Monday !

It will be only 2 Lenny, as I plan to swap van again in 2 years time.

Whats next best to the Toyo in your opinion ?

Hankooks are good but I wouldn't fit winter tyres if only fitting 2.

Depends how many.miles you do, if doing 8-10k a year they will be well over ½ worn in 2 years.

I've always put new winter tyres on in the autumn and always on the driven wheels.

If you put them on the rear on a fwd van then you have lost most of the benefit..

Tyre rating should be 116 or better still 120.

If you use the van regularly you don't need camping tyres.

Cheers James

The Tyre proffessionals have said for some time now that new tyres should always go on the rear irrespective of which are the driven wheels. However my reasoning is similar to yours particularly as the front tyres will have displaced the majority of the water for the track of the rear tyres to run in.

Hankooks are good but I wouldn't fit winter tyres if only fitting 2.
so I'm guessing the Hankooks and Toyo are both winter tyres ?

At the moment, I'm probably only doing 3-4000 miles/yr - spring & autumn trips to Scotland. I tend to stay put, dont tour around so much as I used to.

I saw Devanti quoted as being good ?

so different models of tyre have different ratings?
or
same model of tyre can be bought in differing ratings ?

Generally the load rating is down to the tyre size there are a few tyres that have rating options but not many. Always best to have a 10% margin on load rating.

margin over what pls ?

So if my van weighs 3500 Kg, what relation does that have to tyre weight ratings ?

( or maybe I'll just sell it, buy a pipe and some slippers)

what do you think of them ?
Pleased with them, smoother ride compared to the Michelin camper.
We did need to do an emergency stop at 60mph and they worked really well.
Also gripped well on wet grass.
I paid £106 each for 215/75R16 116

e.g. rear axle 2000 kg so a tyre with a load rating of 1000 kg + 10% = 1100kg, load rating off 112 is 1120kg, 111 is 1090kg.

Great thanks - And are these CP camping rated tyres ?

so according to Lenny's calcs, 116=1160kg, (x2=2320 on the axle) ?

Mine is 1850 on F axle / 2000 on back

But my tyres are 215 / 70 / R15

So my load rating may be slightly less than those Manic got

He said they were Hankook Lantra summer tyres, they are commercial tyres, only Michelin, Continental & Pirelli make CP tyres.

So if my van stands for long periods (eg over winter) must I stick with the CP rated models

My current are Mich agilis camping, but they are getting slated on this site
whats my options ?

If you use van tyres go for a higher load rating if you can, also helps taking the van out for a 20 mile run every few weeks helps to keep the tyres supple. Personally I hate CP tyres, Michelin are the worst.

I SORN mine when it's on the van park, that and the insurance reduced by using a accredited storage facility, just about saves the cost of the storage itself (£420/yr)

Which are the least bad CP versions ?

About the worse thing you can do to a vehicle leaving then sitting unused can cause all sorts of problems really not worth the risk. For the few bob it saves it could cost you a lot more if you get problems. Best to leave it taxed and take it out regularly even better use it as intended.

I was quoted just over £100 each for Hankook Vantra LT RA18 ( are they different from Lantra ?) from McConnechy's in Perth.

Load rating is on Vantra LT RA18 is 107. = 1030 Kg (so the tyre guy told me). 2 on axle =2060kg.

Lenny's 10% (of 2060) = 206kg 2060+206 = 2266Kg

So these tyres can carry 210kg in excess of my max axle load. (or have I got it completely wrong)

my front axle is rated 1850max.

or does it mean 1850 + 10% = 2035kg

I'm getting confused now, maths never was my strongest point !!

Someone check my maths pls ?

Update: in the end I went with Bridgestone Duravis, at the sizes specified by manufacturer.
£130 each from McConnechy's at Perth, en route to the badlands of the north,
