Which bbq

A few negative comments about the Cadac here. Ours (Carri Chef 2) is not christened yet (won’t be long tho!) but am becoming a bit concerned we may be disappointed with it. Are the issues to do with usability, reliability or both?
We bought one but rarely use it. In fact we’re away now and we haven’t brought it. Basically it’s just a gas flame that you put something over, it’s definitely not a barbecue. If I have a decent piece of meat, then I would rather cook it on our proper charcoal BBQ. I can’t see why we bought a Cadac, the hype probably.

Thought the whole idea of BBQing was for it to be casual and simple.
Some of the joints i read people are cooking are more like a Gordon Blue menu.
What ever happened to throw a few ribs on th barby.

Gordon Bennett or Cordon Bleu? :p

Can’t be anything simpler that lobbing a chicken in a freezer bag, slinging in a bottle of Nando’s Piri Piri marinade, leave for a few hours in the fridge, and place it on the BBQ unmolested with the lid closed for an hour. Open the second bottle of wine and serve!

The second one:LOL:
But it's not BBQing in the true old sense of the word is it.

I think it is - what you’re talking about is ‘grilling’ with the lid up:

“When you barbecue you are cooking with a slow circumvented unit of hot air with the lid closed. Grilling is done with the lid up and you're cooking with direct heat on the bottom, instead of all around the source. “You grill a steak and you barbecue a pork butt.”

Well we could always go along to one of the Smoke & Fire Festivals or Grillstock in Bristol and ask one of the pitmasters to adjudicate?

I know what my money will be on! :giggle: ;)

Don't be put off by the comments on here, we all have our own opinions as to which is the best BBQ, the true answer is the one that suits you is best.
Gas BBQ's have their place as do Charcoal, at home we have a Large Weber Kettle for when the family descends on us, we end using loads of Charcoal and the Weber is kept burning for most of the afternoon.

If it's just a few of us then the Lotus style BBQ is amazing, it uses hardly any Charcoal, is ready for use in 5 mins and will BBQ for upto 1-1/2 hours on one filling, it's so easy to add more and just keep BBQ'ing.
Without a doubt it's the best one that suits us.

We have the Cadac Gas BBQ's and they work great and after a few uses they will give that BBQ smoky flavour.

Light your BBQ, sit back and enjoy.

Cadacs lose again after a valiant early effort 😂.

The Cadac gas BBQs are the most popular portable units . Take a walk around any busy campsite during the summer and you will see more Cadacs than any other brand . We have had no problems but some people find them hard work to clean .

I feel suitably reassured that we will still enjoy our bbq purchase, thanks everyone.

We have this which works well for 2

In an ideal world I’d probably have a Weber but we try to travel light/small as in PVC

A Cadac isn’t a BBQ.

Says who?

Barbecue or barbeque (informally BBQ in the UK and US, barbie in Australia and braai in South Africa) is a term used with significant regional and national variations to describe various cooking methods which use live fire and smoke to cook the food.[1] The term is also generally applied to the devices associated with those methods, the broader cuisines that these methods produce, and the meals or gatherings at which this style of food is cooked and served. The cooking methods associated with barbecuing vary significantly but most involve outdoor cooking.

The various regional variations of barbecue can be broadly categorized into those methods which use direct and those which use indirect heating.[1] Indirect barbecues are associated with North American cuisine, in which meat is heated by roasting or smoking over wood or charcoal.[2] These methods of barbecue involve cooking using smoke at low temperatures and long cooking times (several hours). Elsewhere, barbecuing more commonly refers to the more direct application of heat, grilling of food over hot coals or gas.[1] This technique is usually done over direct, dry heat or a hot fire for a few minutes. Within these broader categorizations are further national and regional differences.[2]

This is ours. 2nd one, new to go in the new van. Cooks food for 2 brilliantly (but to be honest i think it's the brilliant chef).
Weighs nowt. Stores in the little box and takes no room up in the garage. And IMO food tastes better cooked over coals/embers.
Oh, and cost £14.

We have one of these. Problem is so many camping areas in France and Spain do not allow charcoal BBQ

I have stated on this forum before that I consider the Cadac to be a very dangerous piece of equipment. Ours caught alight, the legs collapsed and gas ignited from the hose and nearly burnt the motorhome. A search of reviews of Cadacs revealed others had had a similar problem but Cadac refused to enter into correspondence with anyone who complained.

So it has to be a "Real" BBQ but fake grass is OK :LOL::LOL:

Love the BBQ. I switched to GAS a few years ago, albeit with Lava Rock as a compromise due to convenience but still prefer an Full-on genuine BBQ with Coals, ash left over etc. It is the real BBQ method.

CADAC etc (we have one) is again an inferior substitute but handy for a cooked breakfast.

We also carry a small Gas 'BBQ' with Lava Rock. This one. but it does have its limitations, with no grease tray system, it will over time get a congealed layer of fat on the bottom which can cause quite a fire if not checked regular.

It does the job but was looking to upgrade to a better quality unit but it must have the lava rock and I don't seem to be able to find a better one.

Regarding the difficulty of turning the cadac to a lower setting, I have a black line felt tipped on the knob. if you turn it back slowly you can hear the flame starting to pop - any further and it will go out but a good low setting is about 1/4 turn anti clock. Full on is two turns anti clock.
Lovely little thing the Cadac traveller as it also cooks curry and anything smelly outside the van. Also an excellent way of dividing up the workload- you just need to sit next to it with a book and a beer!
Cheers!

Like BBQing, don't like cutting grass:giggle:

The issues with the Cadac must be either down to faulty units, operator error or gas supply problems like using too long a hose. There are ways of helping the cleaning as well, putting water in the bowl so the fat that drips through doesn't stick, using a teflon mat helps massively as well. For cooking other stuff outside, the paella pan is brilliant and easy to clean but obviously this isn't bbqing whatever is in there. I think it's great little device, can turn the lid of the chef pan to create a small oven as well.

We have a cadac but now just tend to carry a one ring burner but I agree about the cadac paella pan .

We always carry it with us ,here it is in use the other day by the river at a French aire.

Pizza on a cadac (using a pizza stone) is brilliant, the cadac is a versatile piece of kit and i dont care if others dont consider cooking on one can be classed as having a bbq ....

Posting up the exact model / type you have might help , my suspicion is you have bought one with a built in regulator?
I modified a Webber one the other day for a customer that was experiencing similar problems .
Is this like yours ?

Basil dog here it is. Charbroil grill to go x 200. I have attached hp hose and a bullfinch attachment. It came with a adapter to fit a patio gas bottle which it worked ok on.
