Been moho’ing for a time now
Hi, fellow funsters, I have a Status 355 aerial installed (more or less brand new) but I have great difficulty in obtaining many station in the UK, and NONE in Europe, so what I'm asking is this,

what type/brand of AUTO sat receivers do you use ?

what type/brand of receiver box do you use ?

I do have a satellite system, but a manual unit, setting is not that bad, but if the weather is not that good it's a problem, so an auto system seems to be the answer.

I've been informed that most of Europe is now either D2 or T2, I cant remember which, but you need a special receiver to get any signals
many thanks
Alan

Hi there,
If travelling abroad we use our iphone with an Apple TV adapter which requires an hdmi lead from the adapter to the tv plus a charging lead to the phone. Providing you are using your own data you will be able to watch all UK stations. 1gig of data will give you approximately half an hour of tv. I personally have 100 gig per month with bt at £20 per month together with calls etc, making it very viable. You can use this system anywhere at home using Wi-Fi instead of data, but it only works abroad using your own data! In theory you don’t need an aerial at all and no doubt this is the future.

Hi we have a 85cm teleco sat dish with an icecrypt receiver.

80cm Oyster ( gets most Sky channels as far as Benidorm ) with a 12v Pace box, but they are getting hard to find now

A new Snipe 3 is around £650. Assuming a residual value of £250 payback based on £15 - 20 \ month data contract would be around 2 years. There's, obviously, no ongoing costs or "data" limits on the dish. You're TV would also have to have a built in Sat Tuner or an external receiver would be required (at additional cost). That's also assuming you'd be streaming via a mobile phone you've already got with no additional kit bolted on which would reduce the payback timeframe. The cost of dedicated streaming kit, if required \ used, would reduce this further.
Obviously, you need to be in reception range for the satellite however that would also be the case for data streaming.
Also, can you "multitask" on a mobile, eg be streaming TV and browsing internet or making a phone call \ text message?
Not knocking streaming, and it will be the best solution for many, but not quite there for us as yet as a few places we go to we can only get a mobile signal (3 and EE) if you stand on one leg, have one arm pointing towards the setting sun with your mobile in the other hand set at a 45 degree angle and 16.75 inches from your left ear!:whistle2: And that's nearly a 5 minute walk from the motorhome!:Eeek: Meanwhile a few hundred channels on the satellite.

Well I’ve got avtex with a firestick and I can’t get the bloody thing to pair with the phone!!

I’ve got a tv Ariel and I can’t seem to get tv on it in most places!!

So I just look at sat dishes with envy!?

And I take my unwatched box sets to view!!

Just come back from the continent and watched with amusement how the Germans have the sat dish twirling away immediately after turning off the ignition, it’s like the most important thing to them, and whoa betide if they can’t get it locked on???.

Dont watch much TV but never failed to get a streaming 4g signal in France or Spain. Southern Spain would need a huge satellite dush to get anything English. The data is needed anyway for email, browsing, this forum etc so no actual additional cost for data if on a high or unlimited data contract.

We have a 65cm SRMecatronics dish with multi-sat control panel linked to a Humax receiver and a French TNT receiver.
Very few places we visit can’t receive a good satellite signal, but lots of places have poor internet so streaming is not really an option
Not that we watch tv a lot, maybe 3 or 4 programmes a week will get me switching it on.

You can buy a hell of a lot of data for the cost of a sat system.
2nd hand Oyster was £600 12 years ago
We watch on average 4 hours HD tv a day and last year we used the van for approx 200 days ( which is about our average )
so 4 hours x 200 x 12 years = 9600 hours of tv..
From memory 1080p consumes about 3gig of data an hour... So even at todays prices how much would 30,000 gig of data have cost ?

And do not forget, when I have finished with the sat system I still have the option to sell it and get a lot of the outlay back

But if you don't stream TV you could get by on a couple of Gb a month at around £2/3 so paying around £20 means paying £17 \ month for streaming. Take your point on the location though but same could, on occasions, could be said for availability of mobile signal.

We have a SatFi RV system coupled to either a sky HD+ or just to a vision plus tv for free sat. Saying that, as mentioned by many above, if we started again I wouldn’t bother with satellite. We mainly use either an amazon fire stick or now tv stick both coupled to a mifi and fixed roof aerial.

You can't always get a phone or wifi signal, however you can nearly always get a signal from one satellite or another.
Also even if you are on an unlimited data contract once you get away from the uk you are limited unless that you are on EE

85cm auto Crystop Autosat 2 dish and system with Grundig Freesat box - brilliant when not windy - auto finds Astra 2D for Freesat (or any other sat if you ask it)

Maxview B2414 aerial with amplifier. Always picks up plenty of digital channels on Freeview telly.

Amazon Firestick - same as any other streaming device although still not figured out casting iplayer to it yet. Netflix casts fine. Best data deal I could find was 20Gb roaming which won't get me very far watching telly so I've downloaded tons of boxsets on my 80Gb UK pack to watch offline whilst in Europe

I‘ve got a Tracvision r4sl dome and a Humax freesat receive.

Next time you come down to get some warranty work done at Howard’s pop in to us and we’ll show how how to pair it ??

FOC before the nasties start on me ?

We’ve got an Oyster V, and use the built-in receivers in tvs (Avtex and Visionplus.)

We’ve been wondering about going down the streaming route in future, but for Europe that may be affected by what phone companies do about roaming from next year. (I know a domestic SIM plus VPN would be an option, but not for France, given cost of French PAYG data sims!)

Same as Jaws . Oyster dish with 12v pace box for Astra 2 (includes sky programme guide). For other satellites, we use the inbuilt sat decoder in the TV.

That’s very kind of you eddievanbitz but being as I bought off Simon Simon Howards Motorhomes there will be no warranty work, the van is spot on (he doesn’t sell rubbish you know??) However i have paired it with the missus‘s phone (iPhone 11) but just have trouble with mine (iPhone 10). However I will probably be down sometime in the near future for a B2B Charger fitted??

I use a snipe 2with à cello tv which has a freesat decoder in it. Not had a problem getting a signal anywhere in the UK and as far south as Bordeaux in France. Bought my Snipe from Germany and had it fitted at my local motorhome dealer. Snipe cost €395 and fitting £99.
Snipe in Britain is as usual much more expensive than in Germany..

Try changing the name of your phone. This sometimes works

That is what I have but gave up with the tuner in the TV, if you change satellites it takes over 20 min to retune, it doesn't remember sats and it wipes all your favourites. I bought an Icecrypt Tunner, once set up it remembers everything.

How olds the Cello, maybe newer ones are better on satellite.
I was wondering about one.

3 years, I think it's still a current model.
Not so much of a problem if you only ever tune to one satellite.

i wouldnt factor any residual value in to as four years time i may well be worthless after the 5g revolution
