Hi all… we came into France on the 22nd November drove through France using the usual non toll roads through to Spain. Stayed in Salamanca, Porto, Lisbon, Nazare, Luz, Tavira, Silves, Cadiz, Tarifa, Malaga, Almeria and we are now in Benidorm. We hope to go up the coast up to Girona area.
Are there any recommended picturesque stops along the way which are well worth a visit. Not necessarily along the coast. We have until the 17th February to enter the UK.
TIA 🙏

There's a nice aire at Peniscola. €6.80
You can walk to the beach 200 metres away. We usually stay a couple of nights on the way down.

If you like coastal walking we really enjoyed a by chance stop at the ACSI site to the north edge of town at L'Ametlla de Mar, near Tarragona. From the site we walked south along the prom, around the port where there was a fantastic restaurant and further along the prom until it ended then along the coastal path. The town is fine but only small. It has a train station so easy access to visit Tarragona if desired. The site facilities, if needed, were excellent

We have stayed on there sure it was called Stop and Go very keen on no awning or chairs out but really good spot.
There is another Stop and Go it's part of the Los Pinos site at the back of the town if memory serves me right

The Dali museum in Figueres is full of quirkiness.

We visited during the morning, had a lovely Menu del Dia of black paella and then stayed the night over in Empuriabrava on the coast (like a mini Venice full of sea canals but not as glamorous!). Lovely cycle rides around the prom too.

Well we stopped in Sitges, though on the coast its very tasteful and one can just park on side roads. We've now headed west past Zaragova and Pamplova and along the Bidasoa valley which is a stunning drive, feels like being in Switzerland. Road is called N121a. We're now at a small aire in a beech forest with beautiful walks up to caves inhabited 27000 years ago. It's near Errenteria, near San Sebastian. However tomorrow we have to turn north and head to Calais for the 15th. We are not sure how to do the no toll route so advice would be appreciated. We paid about £100 in tolls on way here through France on western side.

Try search for tonka western route. Using search button in blue bar at top of page, describes trip from calais to san sebastian with minimal motorway

Morella is a must , a small fortified town rising out of a wild looking plain, could well have been the inspiration for Terry Pritchett ‘s Disc World Series of books , the road‘s a bit wild as well. :)
Peniscola has a fantastic castle with beautiful views of the coast ,El Cid was filmed here , and more recently
Game of Thrones. As a bonus near the harbour is probably the best jubilados/pensionistas for amazing food in that area :)

The tolls around Bayonne arent worth avoiding because the other roads are a pain. Once you get to A10 jct 8 exit and head for Dax (Green sign) N810 at Dax take the D947 rejoining at Jct 12, then leave the A10 at Jct 17, turn right for Pissos and then turn left D834 to come back on at jct 18. Head on around the Bordeaux Ring road and take the N10 for Angouleme ( try and do this on a sunday if you can as its pretty rammed with trucks in the week). You pay a couple of small tolls around Tours then jump off left at the first junction after the barrier and pick up the N10 for Chartres, keep going until you pick up the N154 which will take you to Rouen ( small toll at the end which you can avoid if you want) A28 to Abbeville toll free. Then you can pick up the D1001 which is hilly at the end or take the toll on the A16.

If you can find the blue Michelin Grand Itinaires Map this tells you which roads have tolls.

Hi everyone. Thank you all so much for your recommendations. Very much appreciated. We stayed in Teruel for one night (excellent historic town), however the aire was next to a truck stop, so warming of engines at 6am. Also stayed at the overnight car park in Albarracín. The whole place is stunning and an assault on your senses. Next stop Peniscola (thanks Richard & Ann for recommendation) another beautiful old town. We are now in S'Agaro and gently easing our way back to Calais. Thanks once again. Myles & Jackie xx
