I'm a newbie
My first question is not motorhome related. I know a lot of you must be sat in your gardens like me watching bluetits building their nest. For the last three years I've seen an enthusiastic pair complete a nest and then abandon it. I've got absolutely no response on bird forums so I thought someone on here would know the answer. I have an idea that when the female is up the duff she puts on weight and cant enter the nest box. The diameter of the entrance hole is 25mm as per the instruction books but this does seem a bit on the small side.
My second question is :- It looks like it will be some time before restrictions will be lifted and we can use our vans again, Me being a fine weather camper will be reluctant to insure fully comprehensive for a full year starting in say August or September so I'm leaning towards third party fire and theft, I don't think its possible to get insurance for a shorter period than one year or to cancel it and get a rebate like you can with the road fund licence appreciate your views on both subjects thanks

When this is all over I‘d try negotiating with an insurance company. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Blue tits build various nests then choose One, tpft is only a pound or two less than full.

My bluetits a really lazy I had to put bird boxes up for them and they are all occupied. Some of mine are 25mm some 30mm.

third party or no insurance on a motorhome is a huge gamble as they are valuable and easily stolen or broken into doing damage. Then there is the anomaly that third party fire and theft is often more expensive now than fully comprehensive and will not have windscreen cover

You can get short term insurance, but again that is expensive compared to a 12 month policy covering all risks

I know it hurts thinking we are wasting the best part of the year and still paying to insure the motorhome, but they are not cheap to repair or replace should anything happen. I heard of somebody yesterday who keeps his convertible sports car in the garage over winter, on sorn with no insurance. During those storms a few months back the garage roof was damaged and 2 tiles fell in on top of his car doing nearly £3000 of damage. He rang his home insurance to claim and was shocked to learn it does not cover damage to your own vehicle. If the tiles had blown off and landed on a neighbours car the home insurance "might" pay it, but only if the homeowner with the damaged roof was negligent. It is often not what is covered by insurance that surprises people, but what is not covered

Often TPFT is more expensive than fully comp, also Motorhomes are so cheap to insure compared with cars of the same value. You won't get a 100 grand car insured for 400-500 quid.

Going back to the days when I was skint and happy TPFT was always a lot cheaper no matter what vehicle I was insuring. At the tender age of seventeen I was motorbike mad and I did all sorts of stupid things to keep my BSA 500cc Gold Star on the road, I was going to say road worthy but some procedures may not have been strictly in accordance with the law, however in my eyes they were quite plausible. Needless to say it would have taken a very understanding insurance company to pay out should the worst happened. That bike today fully restored is worth £20,000 (I paid £120) My first car was a Singer Le Mans which had the old fold out brown paper log book stating it had competed in the Monty Carlo Rally by an RAF flight commander in the 1940s. At eighteen I had no chance of insuring this big old beast so I sold it for what I paid for it £40 Today fully refurbished they're selling for £90,000 plus. In the 60s I bought my first camper van a Bedford Dormobile with an elevating roof, probably the best deal I ever made £250 with a brand new engine (not a recon) after two very enjoyable years taking the kids all over the country it was worth a tenner scrap
So what vehicle is worth keeping for a good investment?, who knows.
