Just back from a week or so on the outer hebrides and even though there have been plenty of funsters going there and posting I thought I would add my experiences as well.
Journey started from oban to Castlebay on barra. .. 4 hour plus sailing that cost around £113... that's for a 7m van and driver..
First night spent on vatersay by the beach...
Early morning with the locals
On barra we visited the airport
From barra you need to take another ferry to eriskay.. cost was around £20 from memory..
From eriskay there is a causeway to south uist.
From North uist another causeway links to Bernera.
And from bernerary you need to catch another ferry to leverburgh on Harris. ..and again the cost was in the region of £20
Once there overnighted at some beautiful beaches... ie luskentyre and hushinish..
This picture is of another beach who's name I don't know but it's within a short walk of hushinish... spotted it from the top of a wee hill
We made it up to the butt of Lewis visiting among other places the calanais stones and dun Carloway broch.
The lighthouse on the butt of Lewis. .. you could imagine that been none to hospitable in a winter gale..
On the way south for a ferry back from Tarbet to Uig on Skye (a sailing of under two hours and approx cost of £50 ) I had to call in to visit the monument to the iolaire. .. (I'm currently reading the book..''when I heard the bell '' ).. It is one of the worst maratime disasters of our time and devestated the communities of Lewis and Harris. .
Even the gentleman who I spoke to while visiting was visibly emotional while telling me about the events of that night..
My overall impressions are of beautiful beaches and a feeling of peace and quiet.. you can and do feel isolated and away from it all.
I think if I return it will be to the southern islands.. Once past the mountains of Harris there is plenty to visit but for me the scenery isn't as good...
