I'm a newbie
Newbie..sorry Do I need to carry a hose to refill at sites that provide water and if so is it a off the shelf hose or a dedicated one? What length do you suggest?

Hello and welcome
I carry 2*10litre watering cans + a 10 metre hose, the type that expands when you use it. I also carry some different tap fitments which we have used in France from time to time. Hope this helps

After carrying a 10m hose for years and not using it I now have a 3m hose and a 10ltr container.

I carry this and use it all the time, unless I need a top up and dont want to move, then it’s a 20ltr water jerry can and some exercise.

Took the hose off the reel and it’s in a waterproof bag.

You‘ll soon learn what suits you best. On my first outing I brought a 20m garden hose to use. Bulky and harder to store. First time I used it a chap at the water point gave me advice and I found what’s best for me. Might not be for everybody but you’ll tailor it to suit I’m sure, oh and welcome to Fun 🤩

If you only intend to use Caravan and Motorhome Club or Camping and Caravan Club sites then a short hose to fill up on arrival is probably ok. A watering can for topping up is useful. If you are hoping to use smaller sites such as CLs and CSs then a longer hose may be needed.

I find an expanding hose by far the most convenient. Light weight and very easy to store. I first bought a cheap one but it didn’t last however it proved the advantage of this type of hose. I then bought 2x15m better quality ones and they have been very good.

We carry and use 2 x 20m blue flat hoses on a reel (like the one above), 1 x 40ltr Aquaroll, and 2 x 10ltr watering cans. We like our water 😁

I carry 2 expanding hoses.

60m in total.

I rarely have to move to a tap. :-)

I think the answer lies in how you intend using your van. If you can/want to fill up at home and don't use it all, then you don't need to carry anything.
If you want to travel with your water tank empty and only stay on sites, then a 3m hose will do if you fill up on arrival and are happy to move your van if you need to fill up again.
You could ditch the hose completely and carry an aqua roll and the means to pump water into your tank.

I carry a 15m expanding hose, its lightweight and I carry it in a plastic storage box, along with various adapters, and have never had an issue.

I have had in the past, food grade hose, flat hose on a roll, but now just use expanding hose. I have a 50ft and a 100ft which can be joined if necessary and they take up hardly any space just chucked in the bags they are supplied in. The particular ones I have have brass fittings female one end and male the other so need a short female to female adapter made up to connect to the male fitting on the filler cap.

absolutely agree with above.
from a past thread i use.
Water hose 20 and 10 and 5m flat food hose used all 3 (can be connected together), most used is the 6 foot hose, used at post and with aqua roll (carried in toad)plus a 12v whale pump plugged into extension. 10l plastic used for tea, also got the ubiquitous folding watering can because it was reccomended on here by so many. Only used it once just to prove how useless it is. Dont forget at least 3 tap connectors and various fittings.

I bought a 16.5m hose on a reel from Sainbury's. It's compact enough for my needs and I've even managed to fill up from a nearby tap whilst at a site without moving. It's also long enough for when I'm on a serviced pitch.

I once rented a motorhome with one of the flat hoses and it took an age to fill the tank due to it being very thin.

We have a shortish blue food grade water hose, I guess its only 10 mtrs long, and the end of it with standard straight hose adaptor wedges nicely into the filler hole while filling the tank.......But! I wouldn't be without my 2 x 10ltr Red plastic watering cans, they weigh virtually nothing when empty.
I just fill as needed each day, having 2 cans balances the weight on my arms on the run to the tap and back, and I dont have to make sure all the water is squeezed out of the hose before storing it.
Fortunately we have a large garage to store these things, and I have been known to do a few trips between tap & van to get the tank brimmed up....well it keeps me fit I guess, and it saves me having to move the van.:giggle:

I have a flat hose, 20 metre length on a reel which is a bit of nuisance to roll up after use but it means i can always fill up. I also carry the hozelock screw adapters for the taps with the screw fitting, useful home and abroad, just remember to remove your own when finished so i keep them in the box for the water/electrical bits needed while away.

For the last 7 years I’ve only ever used a 5l food standard water container to fill up with. Use a blue house at home for the initial fill but never taken it with me, prefer the exercise of walking to fill up 🙂

7l watering can & 10l water bottle, it’s a nice walk when you’ve forgotten to check what’s left in the tank & you’ve just soaped up

Be sure to get a food safe hose, usually the blue ones. I stupidly used a cheap green garden hose to fill up and spent about two days flushing the system to get the taste of plastic out of the water.

With only 60litre tank capacity, most of the time a couple of trips to the tap with a watering can and bucket is preferred, especially for topping off. Even when almost empty, and first arriving on site I find filing by watering can convenient, there just seems much less faffing that sorting out the hose, although I do carry a fold flat one on a reel.

With limited space in my van for storage, both the bucket and watering can are collapsible. See the ranges by Collapze. I could of course have two watering cans, but bucket holds more than the can so I fill both, tip the can into the van, then fill can from bucket and usually two or three trips at most has done the job.

With 2 showers a day we use 40-50 litres which is too much for a watering can so I use a 50 litre water hog and a transfer pump, if the tap is too far for my expandable hoses.

Very similar here, probably 20m hose and 10l watering can and water container. One in each hand seven trips from empty to full and good for me.

I always ensure that I carry a straight hose to hose connector so I can join both ends of the hose together to save it leaking in the motorhome and to stop any bugs making there way into the hosepipe

10L jerry can and some exercise for me. We’ve stayed on sites (mostly tenters), where this is the only method available so rather than carry cupboards of extra stuff have just continued.
