MH
Just looking
Picking up my new (to me) MH on Thursday

Got most essentials but need to buy a hose for filling the water tank.

I am looking at food grade hoses, but cant decide between flat reel hoses and the standard type. Also how long a hose is usually needed? The issue with a 25m flat pack is you need to unravel the whole thing, even if the tap is 2m away! Issue with standard hose is the size of it and storage.

Comments?

Thank you.

I have a 25m but also keep a 2.4m length and a 3.6m length in the locker. Short ones just for filling up at service point and longer for when pitch has service tap on it.

as above for us too, a lot depends on how much room you have to store things

we also carry a watering can (y) focuses the mind better when showering if you have actually 'fetched' the water (y)

Why food grade? The water isn’t coming through food grade pipes for its possibly sixty miles journey to the tap

We use one of those springy extendable ones. Benefits are that they are really light, ours extends to around 25 metres and yet still fits in a small kayaking-type waterproof bag, it's really easy to drain any water dregs out. Only downside is it isn't as fast to fill as a standard hose is, but for us we are normally only "topping off" when we see a handy tap and generally only do a full fill from empty on the drive, so not a huge issue for us.
Oh, they're bloody cheap too.

Flat food grade for me. One at 10m one at 15m and a joiner. Small enough that I can just roll them up so no water stored in them and easy to use.

For a hose on a reel we have the Brunner 3 core food grade hose pipe as don't have to fully unwind it to use it.

We've tried one of the 3 core food grade hoses that you don't need to unroll but found it far too slow. Our last MH had a Whale fill point so we had to use a Whale hose which was 7.5m and folded away flat. It was fine for storage but often wasn't quite long enough so we bought a 10m expandable hose as an extension (just an ordinary garden one). On the new MH we have an ordinary fill point so we either just use the expandable hose (if it'll reach) or a watering can. I don't see the point of the food grade hoses really, its not like the water spends a long time in there.

Expandable hoses are great. Easy to store and light weight. I started off with a cheap one but it was slow and did not last. I then bought an Xhose which is excellent but costs more. I now have 2 so that I can often reach taps without moving my motorhome.

Yoyo for me ,food safe and expands i have a 10 mtr, and 15 mtr very good only thing is they tend to have some residual water in cos the two ends are water stops only way to get it out is to put a spray gun on one end .

We have one long one and uncoil it

I always take my water tank with it's engine to the tap, so my 10mt non kink garden type hose is always more than long enough. Never needed anything else and it coils up quite small.

We do the same but have a 3m hose we use nearly all the time and a flat one on a reel just in case. As you say we're lucky as we have a motorhome with an engine so we take the tank to the tap usually.
Neither are food grade the waters in the pipe for such a short time I can't see any problem.

Had about 4 or 5. Cheap ones have burst quickly, expensive including xhose have burst after a couple of years use, usually when I'm in the line of fire. Always apprehensive about using them for drinking water, although have, as the inner core is a sort of foam tube that could hold a lot of bacteria. Also the flow rate reduces as the tap is opened and the pressure drops. Going back to solid hose.

Good quality garden hose for us, a 3m & 10m so I can get to either side of the van & can join them. Carry a roll flat 20m one off the cassette for emergencies only used it twice in 13 years.

I had a flat hose cassette.... But not for long.
Without thinking I turned on the tap before unrolling, it pushed one side off the cassette and broke it.
No recollection of where it went.

We had a flat one with previous van, with a special fitting to attach to van (autosleeper). That was a bit of a pain to wind up. We now have a 10 m ordinary food grade hose plus a hozelock expandable hose. We need both to be able to fill up at home. We also use a lot of CLs where it is not always easy to get close to a tap. We are on a small private site at present and if we wanted to fill the tank we would need more than 10m. We also have a watering can for top ups.
