We have some extra time before we need to get home and wanted to visit the Palaces at Versailles. Anyone know of where we can park up nearby? Must either be close or have good transport as can't walk very far.

Can't help in parking sorry, but we were dissapointed with Versailles due to crowds and queues. Much preferred camp de Bastille further north in Normandy, stunning. Inspired by Versailles but of course lacks the history. Still worth a visit if you can get there.

There are 7 car parks in the area of the chateau but only one for campers during the day.
You can see all the details here:

Parking Sceaux is the one. I would have a look on Google maps to find that car park.
Lot of years since we visited but saw a tv prog a while back where they had done a huge amount of restoration. Best time of year to go see.

Thanks everyone. We have been in touch with Tourist Office. Parking is permitted in Parking Sceaux during the day but you have to move after 5pm. The only campsite nearby is Camping Indigo in Bois de Boulogne. It is €30 per night without electric which we would have paid but then they add €22 booking fee on top. Looks like it is back to plan A and Poitiers!

SITE DESCRIPTION: Huttopia is a fairly new site of 4ha with a close to nature' ethos. The site is located in the heart of a forest only 5 minutes drive from the Palace of Versailles. Pitches are available in various sizes from 80m2 up to 120m, some with no connections others with full services -- large motorhomes are better using the serviced pitches as the other spaces are uneven & have low branches /tree obstructions. The pitches are not separated but are in the forest so all have shade. Some pitches are uneven and there is little grass on them. There are also some pitches specifically for motorhomes. The 4 toilet/ shower blocks are of timber construction, quite new, well maintained and with good standard facilities as well as laundry & washing up areas. There are also timber chalets + static tents on site run by Huttopia.

Facilities include a heated swimming pool, paddling pool, table tennis, boules, cycle hire (with trails in the forest) and a good playground. There is a restaurant, takeaway and refreshments shop. WiFi available by purchasing a card from reception + computer with Internet access in reception. Good motorhome service point with large platform drain.

REVIEW

1) This must be the most convenient site if you wish to visit the Palace of Versailles-15 minute cycle ride (along cycle paths) or 5-minute drive. It is also good for visiting central Paris as it is only a 5-minute walk to the PorcheFontaine Station (on the Paris RER system) and then 20 minutes by train to the Eiffel Tower.

The site is quite original with its "nature" theme. We found it very pleasant staying in the middle of a forest but it could be quite dark on dull days. The facilities are all quite new and of good quality. They are regularly cleaned by the pleasant staff. The pitches are ok but some could be difficult for large vans because of the many trees. The pool is fine and there is a good pizzeria and bar on site, which was very popular in the evenings, as well as a small shop selling drinks/ ices & bread in mornings.

2) We stayed here in July, 07 & although it was full every night, because of all the trees -- it never seemed that crowded, the woods gave the site a peaceful relaxing feel & kept it cool during the day The toilets & showers were working to full capacity but were well maintained, always clean & were nice & modern. Pitches are not very well marked out & you just park roughly where the map shows you should be, although the pitches with hook-ups seemed to be better arranged. The site was very quiet as the one-way system limits traffic around the site & there are no entertainment/ activities on site. There is only a small pool & a playground for kids but generally this site is mainly used for visiting the Palace or Paris for which it is ideally placed. My main criticism of the place was that I considered it quite expensive, but I suppose you have to pay extra to be this close to Paris & Versailles.

3) "There was only one toilet block open and the site was quite busy, ending up using our van for showers etc. also nearly all the pitches were very uneven, even with the chocs in place it was difficult to get level, most people we spoke to felt the same. It is good though for transport into Paris and for the Chateaux, (15 mins down the road to train and bus stops). A word of warning though, we made the mistake of going to the chateaux on a Sunday, big mistake waited 75 mins in the queue to get in but as it is closed on Mondays we had to do it! worth it though. Would not use Huttopia again. Gaugey"
