We've been using Frequent traveller for the past few years but now looking at alternatives and Tesco Club card points have been suggested. The trouble is we don't much like the shop and its not that convenient to use from here.

Is anyone using a Tesco credit card to build up points? and how long does it realistically take to build up enough points if you do't actually use the shop?

Thanks

We have a Tesco credit card, and as we live in a rural location, Tesco is our nearest store.
As for how long to accumulate points , it all depends on your spend.

We use Tesco credit card for everything and also shop there, get at least one free crossing on Chunnel every year plus 4/5 free legoland tickets - 2 free return crossings this year and legoland tickets plus £50 vouchers left as COVID scuppered last year 😄😄- so I think so ! But you have to pay card off in full every month to make it ok!

Hi,
Although our 'local' supermarket is Tesco, we only use it when we need bare essentials immediately.
I do not buy their fuel as I believe they have not been playing fair having managed to starve out the nearest four garages. Now they've managed that, they are no longer competitive.
But, we still have their credit card which includes the club card.
We use it for EVERYTHING in the UK.
This includes fuel purchases, Council tax, insurances, shopping at all stores etc

From memory, last year we spent, about £14000 with the card and I appreciate that this may seem to be frugal.
Once upon a time Tesco were giving a point per £ but I think that's down to a quarter point per £.

Even if it doesn't pay for a return per year, it could go a long way to paying for it.

jongood. We too use a Tesco CC for all purchases Jon, especially during the pandemic, and have since stuck with that arrangement. Our weekly shopping isn't with Tesco though. ;)

It has taken us a couple of years to build up enough vouchers (£110 x 3), to pay for our next return crossing on the Tunnel. 3 x years ago, we bought an Irish Sea return crossing with what vouchers we had then, and just made up the outstanding balance with a card payment.

With ET, you have to buy a return journey, which means that if you then rearrange your return date, there is usually a fee to pay, plus any extra if it's a dearer crossing.

HTH,

Jock. :)

We use a Tesco credit card and we rarely shop at Tesco, but pretty well everything we buy goes on the Tesco credit card, and pay the bill at the end of the month.
We rack up enough Tesco points for a tunnel crossing at least once a year. We are off in May on Tesco points and last week booked a crossing for September which cost us £39 return by using Tesco club card points.

We don’t shop at Tesco but just use their CC for everything and accumulate enough points for an annual crossing each year.

I don’t think theres a fee to pay. You pay the difference in price from the one you bought and the new one. When I needed to change after we needed to do some work on the motorhome on a Sunday, the real difficulty was, using a Tesco voucher booking, we needed to phone, couldn’t do it on line. Lines weren’t open.
I think they’ve changed that.
in our case the 24 hour flexibility helped!

To save you looking on the website 😀 if you don't shop in Tesco you get the equivalent of £1 for every £800 you spend, that is then tripled when using the vouchers for Eurotunnel,so it all depends on how much you spend 👍

so I've been told 😃

Yes, you can now book with club card vouchers on-line, we did last week.

You can buy a single but you are unable to use vouchers for return only, you don’t need to buy a return you could just get a single and what you save on that just evens out over your return when you come back😊

Just spoken with my financial adviser (the wife), and she tells me that shopping in Tesco you get 1 point (1 penny) for every pound spent in-store and 1 point for every £2 spent on the CC. (y)
So your only out by a factor of 4. :giggle:

Yes dogs added no problem
( just booked June trip last week including dog)

Just checked it out with the Boss, and pre FT days when we first used Tesco vouchers, you couldn't book single crossings on ET, only return crossings. Possibly things have changed over the years.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Thanks, thats exactly what we would prefer, we like to keep our options open for returns.

Your journey has to originate in Folkestone. You can book a single out but not return.

I know this as a few years back I planned to use them to get the Tunnel back and the ferry out, I couldn’t. Alas I had already booked the ferry. :-(

We shop at Tesco and I use their credit card. Since just before Christmas I have got enough vouchers to put £200 towards a crossing. Booked it the weekend and it was dead easy. No phone faff like it used to be.

I’ve changed crossings a number of times. booking a return well in advance of a likely return would provide plenty of flexibility I think

No idea I'm just the messenger 😀 but on the other hand,

If you spend £4500 in Tescos you get 4500 points which are worth 1p each, so £45, they are trebled when used on Eurotunnel so that is £135, about one single trip.

There is clearly a misunderstanding and confusion. There are two elements, Tesco Clubcard and Tesco Credit Card, which may be separate or combined in one card.
A Tesco Clubcard earns 1 point for every £1 you spend instore or on-line. Tesco Fuel purchase earns 1 point for every £2 spent.
Tesco Credit Card awards a further 1 point for every £4 charged to the Credit Card for Tesco purchases or 1 point for every £8 charged to the Credit Card for purchases that are not from Tesco.

We also used FT account. After moving to Near Portsmouth we have found we tend to travel over to Caen or direct to Spain. You ask how long to collect sufficient points to pay for a crossing. As has been explained the value of the collected vouchers is then worth X3. So £50 then is worth £150 in spending. To collect the points we changed our spending usage. I set up a direct payment for the Council tax with the Tesco CC. So that's £2000 of spending that was required. Then as Tesco Petrol station is local to me. spent all petrol on the card. Then spend everything else on the card and make sure the bill gets paid each month. Its amazing how quickly you collect £50 of vouchers. Problem for me is that Brittany ferry do not accept Tesco Vouchers so use the Tunnel when heading North in Mainland Europe. Have recently been informed that DFDS also take the vouchers but need to confirm this. That will enable us to set off from Newhaven. The point being is a bit of planning and switching payment methods soon rack up the spending points

no results for DFDS on tesco web but from Newhaven don’t forget seniors discount but you have to phone for it
