Hi there I was wondering if any other funster has had the same problem as me. I have a Laika 5009 and it has only done 8000 miles and I am on the limit on my front tyres they are Michelin 225x16. Tyre pressure is maintained at 78psi I run quite heavy usually max weight 4250kg with a auto gearbox,150hp,
I am currently in Norway and a garage are going to swop the front to back for me but going forward I don't really want to eat tyres at a rate of only 8k
Any advice would be appreciated

sounds like something is seriously wrong

I am guessing you are front wheel drive??

Pressure sounds a ,little high to me, but our Mercedes based Hymer is coming up for 30K miles, 28K by us, just changed the fronts due to scrubbing insides, wheel alignment issue for mine, but loads of tread left on those and masses on rears

What chassis is the van on?

We had a Autotrail tracker FB which is around 3650kg on a Fiat Ducato and when we sold it at approx 22k miles was on the same tires and they were hardly showing any wear.

I am a fairly slow driver and tend to take it easy.

But surely the tracking must be out. Was the wear even across the thread?

There doesn't seem to be any issues the tread has worn evenly so to me that says the tracking is correct, I also have full air suspension so I know the contact with the ground is good at all times

Its not good practice to put lower tread tyres on the rear. It can lead to the rear end spinning out in severe breaking or slippy conditions.

What make tyres are they? If they are winter tyres they may be made of a softer compound so will wear out fast if used all year long.

Wow that is going through them pretty quick, I can only suggest too much wheelspin on start up, you say you run quite heavy so possibly the front is light and scrabbling for grip.

Just been on a weigh bridge last week as they are free in Norway 1870 at the front and 2250 at the rear, they are Michelin agilis 225x16 CP's tread depth 2mm.
They only thing I can think of is I've just done 1800miles on the E6 in Norway which a very twisty and in most places single lane road going through mountains etc.

It might be that the road surface is ultra grippy being in Norway, I know Scotlandshire mountain roads used to shred the rears on our bikes as some had glass in the surface to give better grip and reflect light but 8k is nothing on a modern tyre really.
As said, not advisable to put them on the rear.

The tyre looks fairly evenly worn so I agree probably not tracking.

Fully loaded with lots of bends, accelerating up hills and braking down them would increase the wear but I would have thought for a van tyre such mileage is still very low to get to 2mm.

There are plenty of vans "roaring" around the UK that I am sure don't scrub their tires out in 8k.

I'm on a Fiat heavy chassis - 4250k
Not auto and basic 2.2 motor
Done nearly 18k on UK roads on Vanco Campers.

I run 3.25 bar on fronts and 3.75 rear IIR

Fronts have about 4mm left on them.. At a guess!

Edit:... Front tyre

Ref: grippy roads That sounds more plausible as we've also went to Bavaria in January for 5wks when the temp went down to -10° and the roads were perfect

Of course they are not a "van tyre" they are a "camping tyre" I have read before that they are quite a soft compound compared to a proper "van tyre"

I had Continentals on my works van and got 55k out of the fronts 90k on rears, when requested Continentals again from lease company while at KwikFit was told to put Dunlops on (price). When asked for mileage they said right, put Continentals back on.:LOL::LOL:

I've just checked out the tyresafe web site and I'm going to reduce my fronts to 64psi which what they recommend for 1900kg front and keep the rears at 80psi again this is what they recommend as well as Michelin
Thanks again for all your posts

That does sound more reasonable for pressure

Your photo of the tyre may be an illusion with light, but the centre does look to have less tread than the outer grooves, usually only achieved by too high pressure

Hope it doesn't dent your finances too much buying 2 tyres, can we have some more photos of Norway please (y)(y)

On our way there in August, but not as far north as you this time at least :)(y)

The photo does look as if the tyres are over-inflated, that, plus a heavy right foot could cause the wear but it is extreme. I would expect to get 20-24k from my front tyres. I am careful when maneuvering not to scrub the tyres and have a gentle right foot.
Edit
Should have said that be trial and error I now run at 55psi on the front on a 3500kg. chassis.

I've put the rears on the front and dropped the psi to 64 and have another 3000 miles of our Scandinavian tour to go so let's see if these fair any better, as to the heavy right foot I don't think I have in my last van we did 25k on a set of vanco's but it was only a 3.5 tonne van

I've just checked my identical tyres on a similar van with an ALKO chassis but 3850 KGS.. 150 BHP but manual. Its done 8750 miles from new and it has about 6mm+ on the front.. Pressure set at 5.5 Bar which I think is 80psi.. I had my tracking checked after 1000 miles and all was fine.

We're off to Norway at the end of the month so I'll pay particular attention to their wear...
