thinking of using our kitchen tv in the van when we go away the tv the powersupply to the telly is output 12v so thats fine but the socket for the power supply is 4 pin can i just use a meter to check for which pair are 12v and ground and wire to those two wires or will it be more complicated than that?

Probably not that simple may have a feedback circuit to the power supply. Can't see why, you often get it on laptops where they have sophisticated charging circuits but not on a TV.

That's what I would do. Is the cable 2 core? Also check that the output is DC.
