I've not been able to update the TomTom for 6 months or more. Presently it's showing "our servers are busy, try again later". I've tried this, and rebooting, adding a new memory card etc, it just gets back to the same message. It does seem that the update is bigger than the available empty space, but I assume it just overwrites the old files. Can anyone help?

I had to delete virtually everything, current map as well, except the voice that I wanted to get the update on. It doesn’t seem to just overwrite. Mine told me to delete stuff first.

I had the same problem a while back.
I had to insert a larger SD card and delete everything.
I've given up updating as more times than not there is nothing pertaining to UK mapping anyway, it just updates yak trails in outer mongolia or updates another non descript building to 3D.
Being a tight Yorkshire man I won't just bin it but I'll be so pleased when my current TomTom gives up the ghost and I move to a different make.

Some of the earlier T-T`s are no longer supported, If they do not have an S-D card. T-T state that the memory is not sufficient to load the current mapping. My Old T-T comes into that category. You CAN load some stuff still but new/updated mapping is not available.

I can’t remeber the detail but my Tom Tom go failed after an update. Looked at loads of info online and eventually managed to follow some advice to reboot it and then load one of the smaller map options, No 4 I think. Worked fine since then but haven’t updated it recently. Will have a look at which one when I’m home. Didn’t change data card.

Their website said my integrated model was no longer supported , cost them a years traffic subscription that. Now use google on my phone if I really need traffic. And when my stand alone TT which I use in my work truck gives up I’ll use something else , won’t buy another TT

I quite like the TT, I've got another make, but it doesn't give lane guidance which is very useful in a strange foreign city etc. And like Papa I'm too tight to buy a new one. Though I do enough miles in foreign parts to justify it. Deleting stuff, I'm not too sure about, might delete the wrong stuff. It's annoying that it's necessary, but on the other hand, there must be alot of info it has to store.

I must have the oldest TomTom in existence, it's the original TomTom 1,years old now but I changed the SD card shortly after getting it for a 2gb item and installed all sorts of useful stuff on it. I have not updated the maps but apart from the newer road improvements it works really well and never fails. I have most of the speed cameras, most of the caravan club sites including cl's and hundreds of wild camping sites installed.
Also I use it a abroad with no problems. Although I use Waze or Google maps mostly now, sometimes I find the old TomTom more useful.
Personally I wouldn't bother upgrading maps, the price doesn't justify a couple of small updates.
We're just enjoying the weather at Malvern motorhome show at the moment!!

That's just it, they aren't small updates.
The average update is something like 8Gb.
On my mega slow home broadband (3 to 4mb) that can be a 6 or 7 hour download and another hour data transfer and often there is no difference to the UK maps. .

I had the same message when trying to do mine today. Eventually it worked on the 3rd attempt

I've tried it a thousand times (it seems) with no luck. I found the help line on t'internet but they are closed for the weekend. From what I can gather from feedback they are not too helpful. Will try them even so on Monday.

Hi Dorwyn

One of the recommendations when you have this problem is to completely delete the Tomtom Home or My Drive Connect software from your PC and after Restarting your PC reloading the latest software from Tomtom's website. One way to ensure you clear the software off your PC is to use a free software called Revo Uninstaller, or something similar if you use a Mac, which many who have had this problem have found helps.

Have a look at this. Worth looking on the Tomtom Forum.

Thank you very much for this posting, I followed your instructions and it worked ok. It took a while owing to problems with my laptop (needs a new battery). I was not able to move the app from the internal to external storage but it did all fit on to the internal storage. There were hundreds of previous updates in the cache so I suspect that was part of the problem. Without your advice I would not have had the courage to delete the software and reload, and I also found that Revo worked fine.

Nothing to do with slow broadband - their download speeds are glacial even on 50+ mbps broadband.

Hi Dorwyn

Glad you are partly sorted.

You say you could not get the map on the extra memory card. does the TT unit not see the card or does the My Drive Connect software not see it.

It is recognised but I did not see the option to place it on the 16 gb external drive. For the moment I am happy to have it working where it is.

Hi Dorwyn

What TT unit do you have? You will not have an option to put the Map on the external memory. The way the system works is the Maps default position is on the internal memory. When you have an Update for the Internal memory stored map that is too big to fit on the Internal memory then the Update will be loaded on the Extra memory and the map on the internal memory removed.

Should you then buy another map this will be fitted on the internal memory unless it is also to large to fit there in which case it will also be loaded on the extra memory.

Hi

Wasn't the cheapest when you got it. It is a very old model but if it still directs you from A to B what more can you ask of it. There are some features on that unit that are missing from the very latest units. The unit either has a 2gb or 4gb internal memory but has the ability to add the extra memory . The map you have must be quite small in comparison to the latest models where the Full European map is about 9.3gb.

If it broke don't knock it.
