Hands up all who thought it was started by a Brit ?

Bettmann was born in Nuremberg in 1863 but emigrated to Coventry. With fellow German Mauritz Schulte, he started manufacturing Triumph-branded bicycles there in 1889 and then motorcycles from 1902 onwards. He bought Elm Bank in 1905 and lived in it until his death aged 88 in 1951. Bettmann, who had become a British citizen prior to the First World War, sold the Triumph motorcycle business to Ariel supremo Jack Sangster in 1936.

I would think if they started making Triumph cycles in Coventry that's where the company is founded. IE UK. Makes no difference what nationality the owner's where IE German.😉 How many times has it been sold / bought,by who and what nationality ?

Ooohh... you take everything so seriously you do ! :-)

Not much British in the new Hinkley Triumphs, apart perhaps from the air in the tyres.

And if you believe what we are told even that is full of little nasties from China !

The earlier 'Bloor' days, the triples were based on the Yamaha triple engine casings

Who cares, it is a motorbike and I hate those killing machines, with a passion. :emo:

I am a tad confused.
Why if you hate them do you bother with a bike related section, unless it is just to vent your spleen and tell folk of your dislike ? ( which is fair enough.. I hate football and might well be tempted ro post as a one off something similar if we had a soccer section :-) )

Do you post the same on every thread in this section, or just this one thread ?

If just this one thread is there a particular reason ?

I like to buy British manufactured if I can ,not bothered who owns them .

Well Jaws old chap, it started with my first post on this thread, which drew me to it and perhaps it bought back my feelings. I told both my boys that if they ever bought home anything that resembled a motorbike, I would take a lump hammer to it. I also dislike football. :gum:

But it's the only motorbike mentioned in the Bible. "And lo, the roar of Mose's Triumph was heard throughout Israel"......
Its good to give the old ones an outing.. still funny !!!

Pete has a 2002 Trophy 4-pot - is why his user name was and still is Trophychap. (Didn't even change it on BIRD and become Birdchap or eg Bessacarchap when he joined here)

Tallulah is now gathering dust on her immaculate Sunset Red exterior complete with her sexy curves, in our garage.

By this time, he has lost a lot of people he knew well who earned their living at Meriden, including one old mate we both knew well and I asked to give me away when Pete and I got married. He was a Test Rider at Triumph in his heyday and his claim to fame was ferrying Princess Margaret's wedding photos hot off the developer in Fleet Street to the Birmingham Evening Mail/Coventry Telegraph main office in Birmingham, when the M1 was brand new and before there was ever a speed limit on it !

All the Police forces en route knew exactly what bikes the newspaper couriers were riding and the rider details from all parts of the UK and he always said the ride was surreal - mega fast, no traffic jams - but not exactly enjoyable, no twisties! LOL

What kills people is a) lack of proper protection of rider or vehicle and b) lack of rider skill and more so than ever these days - driver skill. Many many old bikers have far better observational skills generally than your average person and we frequently commented when touring France by bike that a far greater proportion of French drivers had better driving ability than in the UK and we attributed that to a greater proportion of them having had bikes themselves.

Have you just been on the tour? Its very good, the qc area in particular very impressive.

Very sad that a lot of models are made in Thailand and castings are from Spain? But there was still plenty going on and a lot of jobs for local folk. I've had 2 hinkley triumphs 900 sprint and a 955 tiger and enjoyed both. I never had a meriden one because in the seventies they were pretty crap .

No mate. after my brief sojourn in to Trumpet ownership I decided I really did not want anything to with them at all..
I spose one day if I am in the area and at a loose end I will book a tour

Dunno about venting a spleen. I certainly had mine removed due the unfortunate incident. The surgeon said that I would be safer if I ever crashed again as I would have one less thing to haemorrhage.

I can think of one...... My younger brother.
Copped a bike headlamp square in the back by a rider who didn't see him til too late on an unlit road.
The rider also died.
