Hi all, I have bought a new to me motorhome but its a four hour drive away. I have all the invoices etc from the dealer to prove my journey is legit.
With all the restrictions on travel due to the chinese flu, can anybody tell me if I can legally travel to collect it, as its a business transaction.
Thanks

Think if you have to ask on here, you already know the Answer...just my take on it...

To reduce social contact, the regulations require some businesses to close and impose restrictions on how some businesses provide goods and services. The full list of businesses required to close can be found in the guidance on closing certain businesses and venues in England, but includes:

  • non-essential retail, such as clothing and homeware stores, vehicle showrooms (other than for rental), betting shops, tailors, tobacco and vape shops, electronic goods and mobile phone shops, auction houses (except for auctions of livestock or agricultural equipment) and market stalls selling non-essential goods. These venues can continue to be able to operate click-and-collect (where goods are pre-ordered and collected without entering the premises) and delivery services.
Clic and collect or delivery.

I think you can only travel to collect a commercial vehicle as in you would need it for your work.

A Burstner Nexxo Sovereign, I need to get it home as I have some extras like self levelling and a towbar etc to be put on it.
The dealer also wants it gone and the money in his bank. May wait until Feb 22nd when things may be a bit clearer.

Yes a wise move to hang on a bit I think. Lovely van you bought and I would struggle to wait to collect it.

If its not an essential journey to go and collect it how can it be an essential journey for someone to deliver it?

Being in the same position, I cannot see how it’s an essential journey, I have read the government guidelines and no matter which way I read it, I cannot see how, if stopped by the police, I could justify a 7hr round trip to collect a Motorhome, so we are waiting, which is frustrating, but in the scheme of things not exactly awful.

So how has the dealer managed to sell it without being legally allowed to open? internet ,I suppose?
How can you physically collect it when he isn't allowed to open to actually allow you to collect it ?

They are working so are allowed. Otherwise technically nothing would be done by anyone anywhere.

Hi, how far have you got to travel to collect your new toy.

When my dealer phoned to cancel my February booking for warranty work I was told they had to close because they were classified as a leisure industry, despite their Fiat Professional status. It was also commented that it would not only be illegal for them to open but for me to take the vehicle to them.

How many times has this been asked now by different people. Shows that the market is buoyant :censored:

If I may ask a polite question, have you actually seen this van in person, previously?
Or will this be the first time of actual physical viewing and then, if acceptable, purchasing?
I, in no way, however wish to detract from your excitement and joy of your new acquisition, and wish you well in whatever you arrange to do.
Very best wishes. 😊

I was being a bit pedantic earlier as I run a car transport business and I know its ok for the dealer to get it delivered as we are still delivering cars direct to customers in some cases 450 miles away I believe dealerships are not allowed to do test drives but can offer click and collect without a handover so I can't see why you shouldn't be able to collect

I do not see that essential comes into it according to the guidelines. Is it essential when you go and pick up your Chinese meal or have it delivered, which you are allowed to do even when you have food in the house.
Is it essential when Amazon delivers your DVD that you purchased. Even though there is plenty of choice on TV. or when they deliver you a new book to read. NO.
What is not essential is if when you’ve collected your new vehicle you decide to take the scenic route home and go via the seaside and stop for a picnic on the way.

I feel awful for saying this ,but if you get stopped over 100 miles away from home , do you think any traffic police officer is going to except this as an “ essential journey “ ? Like I say I ,feel awful for even writing this on MHF as you should be pleased and excited about your new purchase, it’s such a shame you are in this situation 🙁. If I were in your shoes I have no doubt I would probably go and get the motorhome, I simply wouldn’t be able to resist .
Just be prepared for a possible fine but try and be polite and positive if stopped and questioned.
There is a good chance you will get back with no problems .
Good luck

80 miles is a long way for a Chinese takeaway.

I assume from this you have paid for it in full? If so, has the dealer registered it in your name yet? If not, get him to do it and showing as yours on line then you can insure and tax it, that way if he goes 'pop' you have clear ownership of it ...

Personally I wouldn't do it myself but if you HAVE already paid for it go and get it, just ensure you take everything you need with you to prove it's a legitimate journey to collect purchased goods.

One other thing ... how are you getting there?
