A few years
We do lots of miles abroad so out of the comfort zone of UK stations do many of you take a "Gerry can" of sorts or plastic top up can of diesel etc in case you run out.
I don't and never run out but come close
Wondering ????

I used to many years ago when fuel gauges were very inaccurate. But not now, most vans will do 4 to 5 hundred miles on a tank, if that's not enough a couple of 5lt cans will not help. When I was working I never let the tank go below a quarter. If you are going far from civilization then possibly a couple of 25lt tanks may help a bit but storage will be a problem.

I had my van converted so in an emergency it can run on urine Dave, I take 5 litres in one of those plastic top up things, I don’t normally tell anyone though cos they think I’m taking the piss

I only have experience of a few countries, but of those I have visited both petrol and diesel are easily available, so it has never occurred to me to carry additional fuel.

No need to carry any with you , if you need any then just pick some up from any layby that truckers stay in overnight. :giggler:

I carry 5 litres of diesel and a container of fresh water after travelling through the Pyrenees a couple of years ago in Winter and having to go to Andora for diesel as so many fuel stations were closed in France.

I figure if I can keep my engine running and make a cup of tea (with the water!) I can survive?

Only once when the French were having fuel strikes. Otherwise never bother ..

What do you drink to convert it into urine? Many years ago Watneys Red Barrel used to convert into a liquid form but that's too much information.

Watneys red barrel needed no conversion process. It was already piss,

Personally get to half a tank then refueling register's, quarter tank and a little more urgent ?

Watneys red barrels started out as piss, came out of the pump as piss and went down the urinal as piss.
There was a pipe from the urinal, via the cooler, back to the bar pump.

We usually carry a couple of gallon when in France as they tend to go on strike without notice. We keep enough at home (France) in drums to fill it up and get us back to UK, just in case.

My mate and his gang used to go fishing. They would hire a transit to put all their gear in and a couple of drums of red to fill the van up on their trip. Then return the van after their fishing trip to a non the wiser hire firm.

With a range of about 500 miles on a full tank in a Ducato based van why on earth would you bother with cans of spare fuel?
Europe might be backwards compared to the UK but they do have fuel stations.
Just fill before you get too low.

Richard.

May be people have been caught out at the card only self serving places and need a bit to get to a supermarket or something

I used to carry a can of petrol for me portable genny??

Carrying any extra fuel could could cause problems at ports getting on to ferries if they decided to look closely and be a bit akward...
Covered by some maritime regulations and strictly speaking is not allowed ..covered under carriage of dangerous goods or some such thing i believe..
though its possibly more secure in a locked Jerry can than a motorcycle tank or in the tank of a generator you may be carrying??
Andy

I carry 5L petrol & 10L diesel, spare for scooter & van BUT more importantly for any poor traveler
That has run out at the side of the road , it makes the world a better place
Nice. I carry a bottle of Henri Bardouin for the same reason.

I’m Scottish, we carry a fully stocked bar ???????
I hope to bump into you one day :)

I'm not Scottish but lived there for 15 years before moving to France. My nationality is Yorkshire, closely followed by adopted Scottish and now adopted French.

I'd forgotten about Watney's Red Barrel.

Now I am reminded of the Party 7 can that needed the kind of opener that punched a hole in the top.

Nobody ever had one when needed, so you generally ended up using a hammer and a nail resulting in the inevitable three-foot beer spout.

Brew 10, now there was a beer (not)
Came out of you stronger than it went in :beerchug:
