I'm a newbie
If you were looking to buy a MH what would be your preference, would you choose a fitted solar panel or a top box.

Solar panel without doubt. You'll end up filling the top box with items that you may need. Solar means you have topped up batteries and extra 12v capacity most of the time.

Solar panel.. (y)

It would depend on:
1.How much wild camping I was likely to do. If lots, then I’d have a solar panel,or maybe two.
2.What I was using the top box for. If it was to carry essentials i.e. stuff I can’t do without, and for which there is no other storage space, then I’d have a top box.

My scruffy top box is still for sale... :giggle:

Solar panel mounted on a top box..BUSBY (y) (y)
I bought my van with a top box already fitted and the way it was fitted it was never meant to come off. There is very little roof space for a solar panel so it did cross my mind as you say Busby to mount a panel on the box but I don't have enough payload so it means one or the other. As I don't intend using the box the only way I can see to fit a panel is to remove the majority of the box by sawing it off and fitting a weathered base board to mount the panel on.

Why not have both? Presumably the box would be mounted on a roof rack, if there is 40mm gap between the rack and roof, you could have solar panels on runners to slide out when you are parked up.

Solar panels are used if you go ”off grid” and enjoy being on your own.

Roof boxes are used if you’ve bought the wrong motorhome that is too small.

Simples.
