We've just bought a new van (I know...timing is everything... ) and it's a Ducato 18 plate. The radio has sat nav loaded, it's a Tom Tom system and when I look at the info it says it is a 2017 version. I've looked at all the settings and cannot see how to update it, I'd ideally like to do it once now and that might last the time we keep this van (usually 3 -4 years). Does anyone know how to do an update please?

Mind you, when I see the cost I'll probably change my mind...

Yeah we went to update the one in my Aygo and saw the cost and put it back in the car. Just use our phones in the car but the satnav in our Compass is great.

Thanks - it looks complicated... I might work on the assumption not too many roads have changed since 2017, and I have a feeling they issue 1/4ly updates and I'd have to pay for each one. With hindsight I should have negotiated with the dealer to do this as they were inflexible on price but happy to do a few mods to the van in the price, so might have got it that way. However, I didn't realise the radio actually had satnav as they'd not mentioned it so it is an unexpected bonus. I will follow the instructions sometime thanks Vanderek and see what the cost is - Ive got plenty of time on my hands for the next month or so...

Cost here for Western Europe:

Thanks Minxy - not cheap but affordable for the one-off (if I've read it correctly), all I now need to work out is how to get it onto my radio in the van as the instructions on your link say "select map...connect your device to your computer...install on your device".

The only things that REALLY change is location of speed cameras, which aren't included in normal updates anyway, and speed limit changes.
Occasionally there may be road closures (new one way street etc) but a Satnav is an aid, not a list of instructions to be followed to the letter. You still need to use your eyes.
I gave up updating mine a couple of years ago after realising after an update there were no changes at all to UK roads.

For £12 a year you can have tomtom go with trafic and speed cameras in your android or apple devices

Fair point pappajohn that things don't change that much but we live near Salisbury which has just gone pedestrian in the centre (it's proving to be an effective way of killing off a city already on its knees but that's a different story), but it made me think that recently this sort of thing has become more of trend so an update to the sat nav could be useful for navigating round towns/cities which we, on occaisions, do. I use my phone with Waze and that is always updated, but the display on the radio is pretty nice so it would be good to use this rather than the phone, but as Waze costs £0 I'll probably stick with that.

Major roads don't change much but they do occasionally change the direction of some smaller ones in town/village centres, a few years ago our sat nav was having a right hissy fit because it kept wanting to take us into town on a certain road despite it saying no-entry ... it wasn't the only time this happened so even with up-to-date mapping it's always going to be out of date somewhere so you sill need your wits about you. We had a similar thing when trying to get out of a town too.

I often put Tom Tom(sat nav) against iPhone on apple play. They often give different routes. Apple always has the best route and gets me out of Tom toms mistakes? Route planning must be more in touch, I’m sure a man that knows can explain it.

There used to be a junction just north of Whitby, at the park & ride site before the A169 roundabout.
A few years ago it was changed to a roundabout.
It took almost 3 years for TomTom to update it despite myself, and I'm sure many more TT users, constantly reporting it.
WHEN my TT unit fails it won't be getting replaced with another TT.

Its down to the mapping providers they use for their systems, there used to be two but I can't remember their names and each will have different routes to the other.

Surprising that Tom Tom charges for updates, my Garmins have free lifetime updates.

I think it depends on the unit - some TTs do come with lifetime updates.

They don't, not all units anyway.
Mine has free updates for life........
LIFE = until TT decide not to provide future updates, not the life of the unit.

So after waiting for almost 3 years for the update it could be assumed the rest of the map was almost 3 years out of date.

A1/A14 is a fairly major change
as is the A14 M6/M1

My Citroen supplied Satnav had me driving through fields on the A421

I think you will find that all the current models that Tomtom sell and also the previous versions all come with Lifetime maps but many of the old units did not. I also think you will find that TT's lifetime terms are the same as Garmin who also have older models that did not come with lifetime Updates.

The A1/A14 roads were changed on Google Maps (and Waze) on the night of the big changeover.
Another accident on Friday at the new A1 junction on the A14 north.

Doesn't surprise me - fan of Google/Waze
But my comment re Updates not being necessary was because of the post "nothing changes".

Posted in support of this. Many an accident being caused by people following old maps and Sat Navs and not updated Apps or looking at the sign posts.
I would rather have up-to-date maps than height and weight configurations although no doubt Mr Google will see a few dollars to be made from such an App before long :)

the useful life

According to TomTom, “Lifetime means the useful life of the device, i.e. the period of time TomTom supports your device with updates, services, content or accessories. A device will have reached the end of its life when none of these are available anymore.”31 Jan 2018

If your tomtom is the older version without the built in sim card to do the updates, there is usually a USB slot or sd card slot on the radio to update it

pappajohn

There are currently a few old Tomtom GPS units that Tomtom have declared obsolete. They are generally those with 2gb or less of internal memory and usually, but not exclusively, have no facility to add any extra memory. It should be noted that although they have been declared obsolete any of them that were sold with a Lifetime map update promise then Tomtom are still honouring that promise. These units are probably circa 10+ years old

Sounds similar to gamins A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs.

Garmin state that they will provide Lifetime Maps as long as their map supplier provides them so they are reliant on others. Tomtom provide their own maps so if they don't continue to make the maps it is fairly certain the business itself has ceased.

Garmin I think also have an additional clause which states that if you do not update your map for over 2 years then the lifetime Update service is terminated for the device.

I bought a top of the range TT with lifetime map updates. Guess what? 5 years later “We don’t support that model anymore “. Bought a Chinese truckers one (ok he sold it to me velly cheap”. £32 at that price you can throw it away every couple of years or when they say we don’t support it anymore
