Réglementation
La voiture tractée par le camping-car : il faut y renoncer !

Toads are illegal in France.

En France, la configuration du cadre à tracter n’est pas permise par le code de la route, en dehors du cas particulier du dépannage.

In France the use of A-frames is not allowed by the Highway Code, except in the case of a breakdown (but then, only by professional breakdown organisations)

Translation of first paragraph
In recent months, on the forums, as special equipment asserted forcefully convinced the legality or illegality of the famous framework to tow his car behind his motorhome as a single trailer. Written in Parliament question, published in the Official Journal May 27, 2014 , definitely makes this illegal system.
and the rest of the article
The written questions in the National Assembly came from the socialist deputy of Hautes- Pyrénées , Jean Glavany . He spoke of a possible tolerance of French legislation on the issue of being able to tow a small car with a motorhome. However, the response of the Ministry of Ecology , Sustainable Development and Energy is unambiguous. It recalls that the European Directive 2007 /46 / EC defines three international categories of vehicles:
- Category M : Motor vehicles for transporting people ;
- Category N: motor vehicles for transport of goods;
- Category O: trailers.
And confirmed that France , the configuration of the frame to tow is not permitted by the rules of the road , outside the special case of troubleshooting . Article R.311-1 of traffic stating that the constitution of a tractor-trailer is specifically defined as the coupling of a motor vehicle ( Class M or N) and a trailer ( Class O ) a trailer being particularly characterized by a braking device compatible with the category of motor vehicle intended to tow .

An end to the ambiguity
Where things could generate conflicting interpretations , and the Ministry implicitly acknowledged , is that the hitch used to tow a motor vehicle devices may be approved under Directive 94/ 20 / EC. The technical unit remains in line with EU regulations but not being installed on the towed vehicle, which must be modified to accommodate the frame to tow ... If these legal considerations appear abstruse for many users , the statement , according to the Ministry , in case of accident declaring that the trailer is a car ( without driver) could lead the insurer to review the conditions of management of damage , should be more . An effect that will no doubt end the controversy and thereby the "career" of the frame to tow in France .

Be interesting to see the response of all the A frame manufacturers, didn't see any at the NEC, perhaps they only do outdoors. Whatever happened to Elvis and her parents who were demonstrating their version at Peterborough a couple of years ago, and had it sabotaged in the night?

It's possible that the UKs objection to many of the rules put down by the EU and UKIPs constant objections etc that other dictates and restrictions will be imposed on us as an "up yours" from the powers that be in the EU parliament.
Next will be a ban on RHD vehicles in Spain, France etc :Eeek:

To be honest, never had need for it in France just the UK.

IMO best sites in the UK are CL's and generally a little too far to walk to most amenities. Will definitely miss the toad if it is banned over here.

Make sure you have insurance for the lecky bikes if in Spain. They are now dishing out fines of up to 2000 Euros if you dont.
out of curiosity (dont have leccy bikes yet...) what insurance is needed is it something specific?

according to this and as long as you meet the criteria (speed seems to be the main thing) then no insurance is needed

BUT special attention to the "Must you pedal, or can you use throttle only?" section might be warranted

I have no idea where you would get insurance, I would imagine your broker will advise. There has been a thread running on 365 regarding this and there was a link to the local newspaper report. Am surprised a thread has not been started on here.

As I understand it, this is a French regulation, not an EU directive. Spain has banned A-frames for years and that was a national decision. For example, Holland also allows A-frames; I was talking to a Dutchman in France a few weeks ago and he was discussing the same issue.

Agreed, the decisions taken by individual countries as to the legality of A frames is not under any European legislation, but under the Vienna Convention of Road Traffic 1968. This was confirmed by the Eu commission in a reply to a question from a UK MEP in 2012, (the letters are posted elsewhere on the fun forums)

Jean Luc , I was trying to intimate that the central powers in Europe would perhaps create an anti British attitude and obstruct where possible in view of the the anti EU attitude emanating from the UK.

I understand the point - always a possibilty I agree. In fact, today's announcement of a demand for increased budget contributions from the UK (and others) seems timed to create maximum anti-EU feeling in the run-up to a by-election. I am sure that was not intended - simply EU Commission functionaries doing their jobs - but it shows either crass political ineptitude on the part of the Commission, or indifference to UK feeling.

For the record, I have always been, until recently, a supporter of UK membership of the EU. However, having done quite a bit of reading around the matter over the last few months, if asked to vote next week, I would opt to leave.
