I have used them before. They don't start until you activate the sim.

I bought a 2 year 24gb & a 1 year 12gb in may 2018. I've been using the 24 since then on & off. When the house internet antenna blew off the wall last week I tried the 24 which had expired & then put in the new 12gb which started up & we used from then until the house one was sorted.
