Hello all !

We noticed we had a smelly grey water tank while away at the weekend. We were due to leave and clean up the next day.I suppose a solution may have been to put the plugs in the sink but I'm looking for a convenient way to prevent/resolve the situation. I found this chemical but I do I really want another bulky bottle to carry around ? any other alternatives for when you're on site and not planning to drive off anytime soon ?

Thanks in advance.

Fenwicks waste pipe cleaner, wonderful stuff

Some people have used bio washing liquid capsules or similar

Tesco sells bottles of distilled vinegar for 30p each which may be a good alternate. I use this vinegar for cleaning and descaling a few things as it's non toxic for people.

Probably just over due a clean/sanitise, I used puriclean to do the whole system.

Add it to your fresh water (full), pull through taps and shower, go for a drive to agitate and leave for a few hours.

Then run your taps to fill waste water tank, drive to agitate again and then leave another few hours.

Empty all tanks, refill with fresh and rinse through.

Empty tanks again. Done.

You don’t have to agitate but I thought it would help so could just be done when parked with hose/bucket

I think you mean, can you get rid of the smell without leaving site and emptying.
I would say, no, unless you tip the whole bottle of freshener in!

In future, before travelling, use any of above methods to give your waste tank a good flush out.
Once travelling, if you are in warm weather and not going to move for a few days, carry a collapsible bucket and empty every day into bucket.

Thanks for all of your advice. Fenwicks, Puriclean (great you can use it for fresh water too) both worth looking into. Collapsible buckets a good idea. I think my problem was because I put some milk down the sink. So that's a NO NO.

Thanks again.

It's the product in the blue top bottle - https://www.busterplugholes.co.uk/product/sanitiser-granules/
I've been using it for years, after seeing a review in a magazine.
A cap full (as per the instructions) down the sink, shower and washbasin after every trip. We carry a bottle when we are away but have only every used it on long trips.
I normally buy it from Lidl or Aldi when they have it as a special (a bit cheaper than normal price).

Bio washing liquid works reasonably well but yet to find anything to work better that the Thetford stuff.

Yes, I know. Other versions can be bought for well under £1 at Home Bargains &c.
However, the Buster stuff has a pleasant scent and we use so little that the saving wouldn't be an important factor.

We got some of this.
Available from other places , including Ebay.
You can wash up with it then flush it down into your grey water tank where it does it's business.
Very compact.

They do compact stuff as well for the toilet cassette.
This is available in standard and eco versions.

Google '40shots'
I now don't put my washing up water down the sink, just in case. The only water I drain into my tank is face & body washing water. We spit our tooth washing into the toilet now. This is a serious effort to keep pipes and tank clean.

As well as the usual fermenting pasta water smells from the grey water, our tank develops a different smell when it has been drained down and left for a while. Difficult to describe but sort of musty/damp woody, our old van would smell like that occasionally, too. It's definitely not damp in the van and disappears when the van is back in use.
On the subject of grey tank products, has anyone come across this?

A couple of bio washing powder tabs dissolved down the plughole for me, followed by a basin/sink full of dirty dishwater. (y) I also use them in the toilet cassette. :)
They come in a small compact box, without the risk of leakage or expansion due to differences in temperature or atmospheric pressure.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We carry bleach tablets which come in a small plastic bottle.

We occasionally place one in the plug hole of the sink so that it slowly dissolves as water is drained into the waste tank. It keeps the tank fresh.

The bottle is about 4 or 5 inches tall and about 3 inches in diameter. We buy ours in France but I believe that major British supermarkets also stock them now.
