My issue is that the right answer is shown before the chaser's. Surely that makes it possible for the chaser's answer to be changed before it is lit up? Why don't both the contestant, and the chaser's answers both get shown before the right answer?

Well, why not be totally transparent? It wouldn't take anything off the game at all. Why leave that little window of opportunity to cheat in??

Actually they press and their light appears to confirm they've pressed. It's called 'adding to the tension'
I have absolutely no doubt that there are observers and adjudicators.
The format is the same since the inception and is the same in all the countries it's aired in with different presenters and chasers.
In fact, why not put the chasers answer first? Think that's obvious
