After years of researching 7.5T I came to the conclusion I would be going with DAF. Seem to have fairly good reputation, plenty of second hand spares and new spares are reasonable.

How the mighty have fallen, and am now about to start converting a Vivaro
So did you go daf in the end then. Link me to your build thread ??

Also i look at every lorry i go past. All the big commercial companies use MAN.... Maybe nice new ones though... But still, gives me a smile.

Actually Scania are top of the tree in Europe - ask any driver.

Volvo with I shift have the best auto Box.

MAN are pretty good.

Drivers moan about the suspension in the MB Actros's

DAF are a bit Marmite

You feel sorry for people with Iveco or Renaults.

Long time
Daf are good as a small truck chassis for building on, spares are cheap and are available all over Europe.
Renault are some daf , but things like wheels are special to Renault and cannot be inter changed.
Early man are good, and parts available.
Just stay away from euro 6 engined vehicles, the adblue systems are tetchy and temperamental, only way to treat them is work them really hard, stops them sooting up.
If you want a longer chassis can, go for dad, ex Argos or similar 10 ton plated demount body. Get it down plated to 7.5 ton.
You then have a better heavier duty chassis, and loads of power.

Oh well if it's the wrong choice of chassis it can always be un bolted and then bolted back on something else I suppose :D

Not my main occupation but I do regularly drive artics, mostly Volvo and DAF with the odd Scania, I recently had a day in my brothers new S650 V8, very very nice.

Sadly Scania don't do small rigids, I ve driven Motorhomes on the MB Atego and the 4 and 6 cylinder MAN's and I would say either MAN are good. The Actros is also pretty good although has the MB problem of being bouncy, even the artics are. IMHO you should forget Renault or DAF, although I havent driven a smaller version recently they always used to be dire.

I can't find a MH on a Scania but there are a few about on FH4 Volvo's, there's some inspiration for the next one? btw if you re a fabricator you probably know that its quite common to extend or shorten chassis on trucks so you could have a V8 scania at 8 metres.

HandyAndy the drivers don't have to fix them but they have to live with the flaws and problems.

One has bluetooth the other doesn't. From memory the bluesolar doesn't (but I might have it the wrong way round).

Ahh yes, I spoke with an owner operator I've known for 30 odd years in the game, he turned up at work to deliver something... He sucked his teeth at MAN, agreed about expense to repair.
Agreed that Iveco may as well be made in China :D
And loved all the Mercs he's had. I think he said 816's never went wrong and were built really well.
I think that seals it, shame nothing other than a Unimog comes up when you try a 4x4 search though (not that a 4x4 would likely be in my price bracket anyway ha.
So I think that's done (until further notice of course), Merc it is for me.
