Tad on the Big size!

Often the case isn’t it , it is all about skill, for work I have an 11 metre rigid crane HGV and it goes into very tight spaces multiple times a day , so tight that some would fail to get their 5 metre pvc in🤷🏻‍♂️😇

There will be a few of those big un's at Goodwood soon.
Would i want one...................for sure i would. Thing is HRH wouldn't step inside, she would be too embarrased thinking someone may see her getting into it.

As you say it’s all down to the driver and Nick always says if you can get a bus/coach in there I can get the MH there too all 39’11” of her! But he is still driving the wagons for a living and he says a rigid is always more tricky than an artic even with me directing 😂 trees are always our issue, the roof doesn’t like them. Getting onto the eurotunnel train is impressive too. The mirrors have about a centimetre clearance. 😲
Trees catch a lot of people out, they don't seem to think to look up. I remember being on a Spanish site that was particularly bad for trees and so much noise from people hitting them, not even in big Mh's, just poor observation from either the driver or the arm waving passenger usually stood where the driver couldnt see them.

It's an Actros according to DVLA. Is that good.

My very first introduction to the Tunnel, was driving a luxury Hi - Liner 53 seater coach full of passengers  ............but I managed it in one, without the need to shunt. :dance2:Bu@@er that was tight though. ;)
As you can imagine, the next time in the MH was more of a doddle.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Watch those mirrors Jock - P45 looming

They've been making motorhomes as well for quite a long time now. Fairly regularly see them in Spain and Morocco.

Ooh hadn’t seen that.

Last year at a European horse trials event in St Tropez we counted +60 STX trucks, was quite an impressive site.

But are they happy, too big for most sites ,many gallons to the mile and don’t talk to them about road tax and insurance.
Used to see loads of these snowflakes when we had a home in Florida all coming downto feel the warmth from the cold north.

When we’re away in Germany I love seen the large ones come in and pitch up some obliviously know what there doing others not so but it’s entertaining.when at bad konigshofen the pitches are 10 meters so easy to drive straight in.

Different base vehicles to the RV's, better MPG for European models. IMO people get too hung upon mpg for Mh's mileages tend do be relatively low and given you have to use some fuel in whatever you drive, the difference in MPG is rarely going to be the biggest cost in motorhome ownership. Ironically road tax is less than a 3.5tonne Mh. Insurance premiums can be a bit pricey for the expensive motors although I ve just renewed our much less valuable but 8.6t Mh at £408.

We've had ours 4 years now and havent found too many places we couldnt get into, even done pub stops in UK.

For now anyway. :(

I'd be interested to know who that was with please Jon, and did it include European Breakdown Cover?

Ditto here at 8.5 metres. (y)

I think if you have a "biggy" you know where you can go with it and where you can't and that can/will dictate your options, it wouldn't suit us to be so restricted but of we are to a degree as 8.7m doesn't fit where 5.5m will but the compromise is worth it for us, which is what it comes down to at the end of the day.

I suppose over time one would learn where one can go.
Being relatively new to MHing i don't know if 8mts is classed as big but we found that when trying to book sites both here and Euro we were sometimes told sorry too big.

For the out of the way sites we like to visit 7m was big enough but our current 6.4m is even better. However width is just as limiting, some years ago I had a 2.4m wide C Class which was a pain in the butt on some lanes and tracks, 2.1m makes a surprising difference.

Oh yes Martin, just to annoy the life out of them if nothing else.
Club nothing, they are both profit making organisations, and not necessarily for the good of the members. :(

Cheers,

Jock. ;)
And would pay the same rate as a 6mtr!

NFU Jock, Fully comp no limit on EU cover, max NCD, SY3 post Code 10K miles pa.

It doesnt include breakdown cover, I'm not aware where I could get that from due to weight.

We rarely use campsites, and only prebook for specific events, just spent most of July in western France, mix of aires and CCP's no problems.

One of the regular comments about aires is you re not allowed to sit outside, we find there are a lot where it does happen but being higher up with larger screen and windows we frequently find we get a better view and a more comfortable space, inside with the windows open.

However there is no right or wrong way to use a Mh and whatever anyone prefers there is usually something that fits the bill both in size of layout of Mh and the increasing numbers of options for Aires/ stopovers/Campings etc.

That doesn't seem a very nice site to stay on. Maybe overnight if desperate.
Its very popular particularly amongst the British, good social scene and fairly convenient for shopping, restaurants and beach. The pitches are tight but I think you're seeing 2 motorhomes facing different ways so that they've got space on opposing sides.

I’m 8.3 meters only limiting factor seem my poor lock the length is not a problem but I never go on sites ,either stellplatz or aires .does an extra meter make much difference?

When we changed from the Flair at 8.5m we were trying to go shorter but it seemed a compromise too far so we totted up all the places that we wanted to but couldn't get on or wouldn't at 8.69m and the total was on one hand so 8.69m it is, I will add that we would go 8m if we can find a layout and accommodation that we like but really just because some sites we might want to go to get a bit touchy if you are over 8m.

It’s an orse box…..

STX make pretty much the best on the planet. Belgium based company that suppliers most of the top eventing teams across Europe
They make horse boxes but also make motorhomes. Thar one is a motorhome with a rear garage. No orses in there mate.

Certainly the better of the two Martin. 👍

Saw this at La Jonquera. It came into the car park lit up like a Christmas Tree.

Nice to look at on the outside but frankly Fiddlesticksin ridiculous size. Look how low it Is to the ground . Not many beach parkups that would get too. It clearly carrys motorbikes so maybe professional racers but I often wonder at folks thought process when going that large . No doubt it will be very luxurious inside but very restrictive and you can get the luxury on something more practical. I wonder how much of it is for " look at me " factor

Although not as big as the STX ours is a truck based Mh. I get lots of, "you must struggle to find places to go in that" comments and then as I watch people making a complete mess of trying to reverse their PVC it all makes sense
Yours is about the max size I'd ever have on a motorhome.

I've seen some big vans down in Greece a few years , huge big American school bus there most years but they tend to park on one spot for months on end then use the cars they carry with them to get around

Ive heard the " i bet you struggle to go places with that " line too. All depends on the driver 😁 ...8.2 metre tag axle doing the less travelled part of the gorge du dades in Morocco last year. Got some strange looks from passing rally cars

You just have to plan a bit more with a big one. When I had my Winnebago which was 40ft long when the bike rack was fitted I just used street view and google maps to plan ahead. Downsized to the Burstner tag axle now which is 30 ft but still look at street veiw and google maps and plan a route or destination. 👍
