:( got a feeling this going to be expensive.

Opened overhead cupboard and food tin dropped onto dining table and smashed it ..:( .

Not exactly in a position where I can hid it .. and I wouldn't care but I moved the tins to that cupboard from above the hob in case they dropped on glass cover ... that would probably cheaper.

Hints/suggestions re repair or new one welcomed. Thank you.

Can you pull the damaged part out of the hole, then squirt a little expanding foam inside. Cut the foam off so that the damaged section will sit flush to the top. Then cover in 2 part epoxy resin until table top is smooth....

Oops the ease of repair will depend partly on what finish is on it now, the cheapest option would be just fill it with car body filler and put a table cloth on. Next option might be a sheet of suitable melamine glued on top.

Martin

Thanks Martin. The table cloth option would drive me mad .. I would know what was underneath. Would I have to go to a mh dealer for the melamine to be cut to size/shape, etc.?

The corners are rounded at one end of table.

Thank you. That sounds good .. but not sure the finish would be .. knowing my DIY capabilities and history. :(

Dont Stress...You can get a Iron on sheet of any colour or type from your local Kitchen dealers (Magnet and who evers Etc) . It actually is a sticky back Veneer that can be ironed on! Works out to be around £10 per square ft.
Still cheaper than a table!

Kev

Could be possible if I do as upmarkethippy says first. :)

THANK YOU EVERYBODY.

I think you would get the laminate, (I said melamine but think I meant Formica) from a hardware type place, cut slightly oversize stick it on and then finish to final size carefully with sandpaper or a file.

Getting Better
Pour water in the hole and hopefully the inside will swell and pop the dent back out, then you can carefully put some super glue on the crack....

Glue after the waters dried out of course...

As already said get a worktop filler product. Colourfill from screwfix about a fiver but its unlikely to match colour wise. If you cant live with that after u have filled the hole put a new formica sheet on the top but without the right tools finishing the edge will be a pain.

The inside will be a lightweight cardboard honeycomb, so expanding foam or hot water will make it worse. it needs filling with 2 part filler and a texture set in the filler before it sets. then paint to match

there are specialist companies that can fix it and come to you for under £100 and the repair is near invisible

You won't need to try to pull it out Joy, if you intend covering it with a vaneer.
Trying to pull it out will cause more damage and probably the 'flap' to snap off.
Just fill it with plastic wood or car filler then sand flat with sandpaper around a block of wood after leaving it to fully dry for a day or two. Sand it too soon and it'll gouge lumps out or roll into balls.
It doesn't matter about scratching the surface, you're going to cover it anyway.

Where is it on the table? If it's near the centre you could cover it with a contrasting centrepiece.

That table is extremely heavy, no cardboard in there. Sweet talk someone with DIY capabilities and get them to carefully drill around about a 12mm hole in the backside of the table, put some glue around the damage area and push the broken bit up from behind with a bit of dowel, which you can cut off flush and glue in place once the repair has set ?

I'm off to the pub in a bit BUT think i have something that may suit..
It's a formica / melamine sheet that I used as a backing for a fireplace (long story) but its the stuff they stick onto worktops etc.. BUT it's Black ... Update tomorrow.

We had a Swift Escape at a dealership in Shrewsbury. The work top dent hole was carefully filled and sanded by bodywork people { They were on site anyway to do another job }. The table pattern was scanned around the corner at Shelley Signs Ltd { Need to confirm with the ex-Salesman }

and a large sticky fablon sheet was custom made with nearly the exact pattern { slight shade difference } was added to a fablon type material. Think around £70 was charged for the task.

There used to be a guy in yellow pages repairs tops. J.R.Heartley
I'd go with the dowel push up n fine line fill.

Great but if you need an exact match to the mm so it can be utilised as part of a bed on some vans, not practical

And you can always paint the top once it is filled - you could get really artistic and creative - maybe even do a pour art masterpiece. Varnish the top after the painting and put a cover over to protect it when in use.
