Obviously don't work too well. My wife has Zefal mudguards on hers so we will see if they work better on our ride at the weekend.

That's dreadful, Neil.
I have 'proper' traditional mudguards on my roadbike and come back from some dreadful roads as pristine as when I left the house.
There's a GCN video on youtube where they go out in white jumpsuits - one rider without mudguards and one rider with. It's a bit entertaining as are all GCN videos.
You must check out the one on wooden bikes. Fantastic things.

The mudguards on my gravel bike work perfectly...not a drop of dirt on me. Bit of a fail with the mudguards on the MTB. I wonder how much mud I would have been covered with if I didn't have any! We'll see how the Zefal work on my wife's bike at the weekend and maybe I will be ordering a set as well.

I have seen the GCN video about the wooden bike....need to check how much Ash I have in my workshop! I have a lot of Mahogany but that doesn't flex as well as Ash. :)

It would've been worse with out Mudhuggers
But - with the same setup - I'm dissapointed in how MTB mudguards work.

tbf, I have a dry - posterior? yes, that's the word for an all ages forum ;)
And just the outer jacket is "decorated".

I have ridden the trail on a road bike and a gravel bike but it was at this point I was glad I was on a Mountain Bike!

If you've ridden along that I'm not surprised you are plastered in dirt. I can't see any mudguard system deflecting all of that.

It didn't help that the farmers have driven on the road to and from the trail after the tractors have been in the fields. It's so wet around here at the moment that the back roads are covered in mud as well.

You need to modify a piece to fit from the lower part towards the bottom bracket to fill that gap. I used a old mudguard which looks crude but works well with the mudhugger. I hate mudguards and can’t wait to take mine off but they do a job for the winter.

It's because you go so fast the mud doesn't have time to fall the the ground. You're faster than gravity.

I think you need to extend the mudguar.

when I see these modified ‘bobber’ type m/c with mudguards chopped or missing, I always think what a mess if road in the wet.

That would work if I knew how the mud managed to get on the bottom of the coat. It hangs below the saddle level!

Thought about that but surely by there the mud is going to hit the frame and suspension pivots not my shoulders to waist.....

You can get an extension I noticed on the mudhuggers website.

Zefal mudguard it is then....

Same trail, same speed, same bike...

Zefal on the right.

Looks like the mud hugger has room to go nearer the tyre.
The Zefal has a snugger fit.
But mainly is it the Zefal’s longer length helping?
Or how it’s following the circumference of the tyre better?
(Current mudhugger user asking 🤪)

The Mudhugger is a fixed shape so can't get closer to the tyre. The Zefal is adjustable on the pivot.

I think the Mudhugger must be designed with different angles seat stays in mind. The Zefal looks longer because it fits the curve of the tyre better. So mud was being thrown backwards from the Zefal and none went on my wife's back.
