I'm a newbie
Good evening everyone, I'm new to they group and looking to buy a small motorhome / campervan, so I'm hoping to pick the brains of people with experience.
I'm looking to buy a used motorhome of 5 meters in length or just over, with twin beds, shower and toilet. I've seen that there are thre Romahome R30 / Dimension, Devon Caramgue, Adria Twin 500, or a small Auto Sleeper Symbol, that fit this description.

It has to be this smaller length for parking and a van type conversion not a 'square' type vehicle and no pop tops due access to fishing club waters.
Are they any other makes l should consider and from what l can makeout some of the above are no longer manufactured, would there be any problems with repairs if this was the case?

Hi and :welcome4:

Have a look at Nu Venture, Wigan. You can also supply the base vehicle for them to fit out which need not be a new base vehicle.

Yes. Sunlight Cliff 540. Good value for money, and ticks all your boxes, (although double transverse bed rather than twin beds.) Available as 'basic' model, or higher spec Adventure edition, which includes a lot of options as standard. I have the latter, and haven't looked back since moving up from a VW California.

Welcome from Ciren!(y)

We started with an AutoSleepers Clubman, but I think it would be too high for your access needs…..and is also not a ‘van-type conversion’………?

....... no pop tops due access to fishing club waters.
I don't understand why fishing clubs don't allow pop tops unless they prohibit overnight stays but a Romahome Hi-Lo doesn't look like one (and wouldn't frighten the fish?).

Hi and welcome (y)

A lot will depend on your budget..... PVC's under 6M are not as popular as the over 6M versions and therefore are quite pricey (as we found out ) and not a lot of them around in dealers. That said, we are very happy with our Knaus Boxstar 540 (not twin beds but a transverse fixed double). Plenty of room for the two of us.

Can also vouch for the Hymer Ayers Rock (was our other choice when we were looking)...... But again quite rare to come across second hand

Good luck in your search

consort kite
I absolutely second the Consort Kite having just collected one 2 weeks ago (and been away 3 times already!) It’s 5.4m long so only a tad longer than a long wheelbase VW T5/6 and ticks all of your boxes EXCEPT, and this may be the deal-breaker, it has a transverse double bed across the rear which is made up from the sofas in the lounge area. If you want single beds you’d be looking at a 6m long model to allow you to sleep lengthwise.
Happy hunting!

We have the Globecar Summit Prime 5.4m which we are delighted with - May be worth a look at as well👍🏻

I second the ENC Fifer and I am biased too because we've got one on order. :giggle: We have a Toyota Alphard campervan (just under 5M) and have come to the conclusion that for all intents and purposes a MWB van is the same (parking, manoeuvrability, narrow road access).

There's not many around so I suppose that's the main problem.

Just seen this, 20 mins ago, on a car park. It looks immaculate inside. Wish I had the money to buy it instead of a car...

Are you mixing up a high top and a pop top?
Pop tops have a folding roof and so are not tall and will fit into multi-storey car parks and under height barriers in car parks.
High (or Hi) Tops are much taller so you can stand up inside, and don't generally go under height barriers.

It may not have had any Advisories at the latest inspection but it has had a lot of serious corrosion issues in the past 18 months which presumably ( ) have been dealt with, but once corrosion starts it's rarely fixed once and for all.

have a look at www.shiremotorhomes.co.uk

initially we got a demostrator, then bought the Phoenix studio xl - ours had double bed but can also have 2 singles. lots of storage space , very clever design.

It's a good point, and it's always sensible to have a look at the past MOT advisories.
You'd be hard pushed to find a T4 without some rust issues now, so the question is how well it's been dealt with. I'd get this inspected in serious depth if I was interested in buying, not just a cursory inspection. Especially since a relative had a £3000 bill to put right some carefully disguised bodged (ie. dangerous) repairs on a previous panel van conversion camper they bought.
On the up side, you won't get many reasonable VW campers for less than £15-£20000 at the moment, with the 'Covid tax' as well as the 'scene tax'! And Auto Sleepers interiors are usually very solid built and robust, even if some do look a little dated with time.

In terms of the OP's questions, I'd say Auto Sleepers last well in terms of the interior, and are usually well thought out.
I've previously owned a Romahome, and I would endorse them. Their boat building heritage shows through in good layout and design and their vans are very functional. Although some can feel a bit 'pod' like. I sold mine because I wanted something a bit bigger, and because the engine was underpowered for the van, but it did it's job well and I had 18 months of happy introduction to campervan ownership with it.

Vantage - Cub @ 5.41m or Sol and Ora @ 5.99m. Based in Leeds, their customer service is second to none.

Nice vans but we were put off the Cub because there's no access from the cab to the habitation. Everything's a compromise though.

Consort also produce the Vibe which is a 5.4 metre van. It has two 6’3 longitudinal beds or a huge longitudinal super kingsize bed. The rest of the van looks a little compromised though, but it’s amazing how they’ve managed to fit such a luxurious sleeping arrangement in a 5.4 metre van!
