Just starting out..
Hello funsters,

Well, one of the only disappointments so far about owning our Hymer, has been the inability to use the shower unit due to it having cracked (these things are wafer thin ye know!).

So, ahead of our extended tour of Wales which starts next week, I've taken the decision to get a repair done locally (at OneCall Preston Ltd) using a SpeedCoat specialist. This is the 'before' image (below) - I will post the 'after' image once it is all done.

Cost is £350 plus VAT but there is a lifetime guarantee against further cracking :)

Wow. They know how to charge. Interested to see results.

How smooth/textured will the finish be? I’ve seen it used before and was a very textured finish.

In our “chalet” unit in France we have two showers, both with plastic trays.

Each one cracked within three years. The manufacturer wanted €1000 to change each one. The cost of the cracked base, which we changed ourselves was €600 each and a pig of a job.

If it happens again I think £350 is the way to go.

Just be carefull who is guaranteeing it.
If it’s the company and they go pop so does the guarantee.

I’d still take the route you’ve chosen though or I would fibreglass it myself ?

I did explore other options, most of which involved considerable amounts of DIY effort on my part, with no guarantee at the end, and after reflecting on the risk of giving an expert the job rather than potentially bodging it myself, it seemed like good value.

I think it is a textured finish, rather than smooth, but as long as it is watertight and not uncomfortable to shower in, I am not bothered about the finish.

Should be able to post pics on Friday.

Thus ours we had all the shower and surrounding area plus sink £450. It’s a textured finish

Textured surely better for not slipping over (y)

Had ours done a couple of years ago, similar price, done by a local agent. Excellent job and, yes, it is a textured finish. My only disappointment was that it wasn't as white as the rest of the shower cubicle, but it's covered by a duckboard so not really all that bothered. If you do have it done wait at least a week before you use it - if the stuff isn't completely dry it stains easily and is then a b----r to clean up. Ask me how I know!

I also looked into alternatives. It looked like the whole shower unit would have to come out, beyond my capabilities, so a labour-intensive (thus expensive) job, even assuming I could buy a replacement for our 12 year old Swift.

But I don’t slip over on my gloss finished shower tray, and apparently the textured finish is a bugger to clean. That is what I was told by someone who had it done.

They have a good product and make a fortune with it. The product used is commonly sold as truck bed liner and swimming pool sealer. being urethane based, it is relatively self healing so resists scratches well

See my earlier post - it's only a sod if you haven't let the coating dry properly. After that it cleans up like any other part of the shower unit.

Textures is perhaps a bit of a misnomer it's actually a shiny rippled like surface. Textured implies a rough finish which it is not.

I've painted a few shower trays with a tin of Cromapol paint- various colours.

The paint has fibreglass strands that span small cracks. Degrease the tray and mask off any areas eg, plug holes and a good thick coat of this stuff will do the trick.
I have also painted the roof of an Iveco fibre-glass roofed BOX SHAPED M'home that I am selling on this site and flea bay. Painted the roof for extra protection. Depending on the size of the tin it's cheap to buy.
Do it at your own risk of course but I've done a few trays at a M'home dealership with left over Cromapol from painting My roof.

I've been told it takes 36 hours to cure completely. Starting the job on Thursday so I can pick the van up Friday afternoon & it should be good to use at the weekend. Having said that, the forecast means it might not get tested till midweek next week, after school finishes for summer. Again will post pics of the outcome, though I'm not sure how well pictures of me in the shower will go down on here :)

Then don’t get it :D(y) bugger to clean then rinse as you go:rolleyes:

Job now done, and I must say it looks great!

There was a fair amount of re-work required at the drain end of things, but all appears to have been sorted.

Used the shower this week whilst away touring West Wales - fabulous! Really pleased with the quality of the repair and everything seems tickety-boo :) It certainly makes a difference when you don't have to rely on sites with facilities.

Big thanks once again to Rob and the team at OneCall Preston!
