Eight Years and 28,000 Miles.
As above, are they all the same, or are some 'better' than others.

I normally avoid toll roads, have never used them in other European countries when travelling in our 3500kg Inca, prefering to use 'slower' roads to see stuff, are they absolutely necessary for Scandi?

Have a look at https://easygo.com/en, cuts prices and automates passage - we use a brobizz (linked in the where-to-buy-section) and never experienced any issues with it. Not an absolute must, AFAIK you can pay by card or cash everywhere but it's convenient and cheaper if you have one.

If you plan on going to Norway and want to visit the far North it is almost impossible to not use at least some toll roads, you will also need the use of some of the many inland ferries.

Both companies have easily understandable web sites and simple to set up your tag etc.
