Satellite T.V. could soon be obsolete.

Speaking of pay TV, that's a pay newspaper 😂.

I think the long term future is terrestrial wireless like 6G, in a few years there'll be too much space junk for satellites

It's been like that for a lot in the motorhome for a while. I think Sky are smart to move before they are left behind.

Took my crank up Sat dish off the roof a couple of years ago, it’s in the garage somewhere and will probably end up at the recycling place soon.

Can't read the article,
So you need a sky mobile account with minimum of 50gb and a sky TV account, is that correct?
If so it ain't cheap..

We done the same. Van came to us with a sat dish already fitted by previous owners. Even then, the market seemed to be leaning towards sim cards and data led streaming and viewing . So we didnt see the point of carting around 20 + Kg of unused all but obsolete tech . Also removed the roof mounted tv antenna on a periscope pole thing , no need for that either.

I'll stick with the satellite for a while yet. Roaming charges will make streaming content whilst touring in the EU prohibitively expensive until the issue gets to the top of the things that the UK need to sort out.

I will retain the oyster for the time, however I will remove the old tv aerial and replace it with a wi fi dome, , however, reading many reviews elsewhere it seems that streaming is not always possible without much buffering. I cant even get the ITV Hub to work properly without the programs constantly going slow.!! I am not alone on that issue either.

I suspect you will be using the satellite dish as long as they keep the satellites switched on then I can't see data roaming as a priority and I doubt the UK government will either.

We're on Sky mobile (not tv) watched the euros and F1 on uk channels in Spain and Portugal using a firestick tethered to the phone. The beauty of Sky M is it saves your unused data so as long as you've got enough its happy days.

ok got that, so you use it for tethering like any other network it is not specific to streaming sky tv

Not at all. It's just like using a mifi or wifi. Big difference is that the uk phone cons the tv providers into believing you're in uk, so content you couldn't get on campsite wifi in Spain is available.

thanks, as of the coming ( jan 22 ) roaming changes it looks like new contracts with vodafone are restricted to 25gb fair use plus between £1 and £2 per day roaming charges.
EE have a 50gb fair use and £2 daily.

we have a phone that is due a contract change so looking at the options to help with data ns access after Jan 22

3 mobile network in the UK, it appears to say all your data is available in the EU without reference to changes in Jan 22. will did a little more, thanks

We’ve just changed our EE contracts to sim only, 160gb for Mrs Westy and 200gb for me back in august for £25 each with a choice of 3 add ons (can only use 1 at a time and an switch your choice ONCE every month).
1st BT sports
2 free EU roaming 20gb per month over there.
3 Apple Music.
So we have Apple Music whilst in the U.K. and the day before we go abroad switch to roaming!! Easy, Never use BT sports👍
Still keeping my Oyster on the roof tho!!
When in Germany, do as the Germans do😁😁

Just looked at EE and it appears cheaper to include an add on than pay a daily rate.
I have a week or so yet so a bit of time to get to grips.
My contract has a year to run so no charge for use in the EU until it ends by mits my wife's phone that is due to change. Thanks for the info

It works because your Sky mobile sim works the same in the EU as it does in the UK, at the moment. If they ever change that, then you will need a VPN linked to the Amazon Firestick. (APP is available). That's my Plan B. 😃

Having just got back from 6 weeks in France. We had been considering getting a satellite dish again after the return of data restrictions. But what I found is we used our data when not on wifi. What we ended up doing was reviving the Motorhome wifi iboost that had not been used since free roaming arrived for connection to free or cheap site wifi. The last few weeks we started using camper car parking as well that has free wifi. Used with no problem and good enough to watch F1 on firestick etc. I think future trips we will just plan a camping car spot or site for a weekend wifi F1and football binge if we can be bothered and use the data on other days. Cheaper than a new dish for the little tv we do watch.

My understanding is Superdrug do not plan to make any changes in Jan. 22 and you will still have access to unlimited data. You could always ask them to confirm this on there chat line. I have them in the frame for when we overwinter in Spain this coming Jan.

It may be worth asking as you say as 3 the network provider will have limits similar to the other UK networks.

Here there is no fibre BB only copper wire so it's either satellite dish or terrestrial freeview. When Sky goes 100% online my Sky subscription ends as well and the TV might go to the tip. It's the END OF CIVILISATION as we know it.

We’ll know more on 07/10/2021 but if Sky do announce an internet only Sky Q there’ll be both offerings on sale for awhile. Sky Q overlapped with the previous Sky product.
“SKY Q via Internet” fills the gap for people who don’t like how dishes look and others who are unable to install them need.
It could just be news of a Sky Q Smart TV 🤪 (but the former or both are likely announcements).
Edit. Clarity

I have a sat dish but a couple of months ago supplemented the TV with a Firestick for the various apps. All looking good me thinks.

What I didn't allow for was the 3 network. We toured west Wales and later spent this month meandering around the SW 300. The signal reception has been sh*te.

It'll be a while yet before I get rid of the dish.

Terry

We've previously only used roaming for 2 months. I'm sort of expecting trouble if we regularly exceed fair use but it hasnt happened yet. I have 2 sims on my account, one for each of us both at £10/month 8gb of data and we had about 150gb in the piggy bank and used about 30gb of it. I have been wondering about getting another one in my wifes name as a backup, it would still only be £30/month.
