I took my Bessacarr e426, 2006 reg, for an MOT yesterday.
It passed without any problems...however I know the people at the test station very well
and when the MH was up on the ramp they called me to come and have a look underneath.
It was pointed out that the front cross member was going rusty.....and as they know I want to keep
my MH for a few years it was suggested I get some rust treatment on it.....
Any suggestions?????...for effective rust treatment!!!!

My 2002 Hymer looked a bit 'scruffy' underneath, only surface rust but I didn't like it. I know it's only covering it up, but I had it waxoiled last year. If nothing else it looks a whole lot better!

The X244 has a known problem with the front cross member rusting it's easy to change only bolts on you can get replacements on eBay for about £60.

Fiat front lower cross member.

I have been using a product called 'Fertan' for years now, having tried many others this is the best i have found. It is used by boat yards as rust is a big problem. Not cheap but i am happy with the results.

I agree Fetan is very good, I think you can only get it buy mail order these days.
In the case of the front cross member it's not worth messing about far better to change it, they get water inside them chances are it's badly rusted on the inside where you can't see it.

Yes if thats the one on the ebay link, then its a well known problem and I done one on my last van, really easy to fit but give the new one a good soaking in waxoil first before you fit(y)

Waxoil does have a rust killer in it, so does more than just cover up(y)

I know it does Tim, but at the time I couldn't decide weather to have a good go at it with a wire brush then treat it...or the waxoil. The former would have been a lot harder work!

There is another thing to watch out for as well as the front cross member on Fiat Ducatos. The sump rusts out, I give mine a coat of Hammerlite every year.

I've heared about that even on X250's never had any problems on our last van and we are only about 200yds from the sea.

If it is an x250 or x290 not necessary as all the Fiat bits are galvanised and if if has an al-ok chassis al-ok say you must not treat them.

Had the rusty sump as an advisory on the service a few weeks ago. Will have a close look at it!

OK thanks for your replies.
I have ordered a litre of Fertan and in a few weeks, when the weather has improved a little, I
will get the MH up on a ramp and do some work on the underside......I will let you know
how I get on!!!!

Hi baggers can you tell me where you ordered the Fertan from as I am hoping to do the same. I understand you can get it on line but do you know the best deal? Cheers.

Having looked around the best deal was on ebay.....£23 for a litre with free delivery.

You are right Porkster...best I can find on flea bay today is just over £26

Pop down to your local garage with a high lift ramp and garage roof. Ask them for a price to spray Waxoil underside for you. Messy job, hard graft on your back, much better to have it sprayed, and it gets everywhere.

Where did you get your motorhome done John? Happy with the result?

I think I need to get mine professionally done - it's just starting to go underneath, halt the advance of the corrosion now. It would be a horrendously mucky job to do myself, and so much easier to do with a proper lift. I hear and read lots of different stories about how well firms do this - some steam clean first, which I can understand gives a good clean base for the waxoyl to stick to, others say that does more harm than good as it drives moisture into hidden areas which then gets sealed in by the waxoyl and you're better off thoroughly dry wire brushing before treatment. Some places take the wheels off, some don't, to do a thorough job I would have thought that you need to. Some places take 2 days, some an afternoon only, which makes me wonder how thorough a job they do.

Opinions from others who have had their MH's done & where would be appreciated.

I had mine done in Stoke on Trent by this company they have places through the country.
I'm very happy with the result mines a new vehicle so no rust whatsoever so it was a straight forward job for them.

Also take your ducato battry out and have a look thay do suffer down the inner wings as the water
runs down from the screen drops on top of battry and sits under tray.

An interim solution is to spray or paint on your used engine oil. Several advantages are cost, it penetrates even the most awkward areas and does what any rust agent does, it keeps the air from the metal.

They don't build'em like they used to, it seems ... 1991 and no rust anywhere ... no advisories on mot either (y)
