Hi 👋 we want to do a route from Calais through Belgium stopping for a few days here and there in Belgium to see some sites, eventually getting to Switzerland and touring there for a while before moving on to Italy. Had anyone done a similar tour? If so can you recommend a route and campsites in Belgium as we seem to be struggling to find any suitable sites not too far from calais as we don't want to travel too far in the first day. Thank you in advance any recommendations would be very helpful, we plan to go in a couple of weeks time. Cheers 🍻

Where are you looking ? Do you need sites or if your travelling through or would camping car parks / aires suit you.
There are so many sites, I think you'd need to identify what sort of thing your looking for.
Tournai has been mentioned on here recently and the obvious Bruges and Ghent are worth a visit.
There's a great free aire at Thieu.

If you do not require services this is a good stop over for the night.

If you go to the photo of the day thread and look about March 20th ish this year we popped around Belgium finding some unusual things.
Cycling through a lake
Cycling on top of trees
A blue beer
A see through church
And some normal cycling.

For your first stop either Camping Memling or the big paid Aire near the marina for a look around Bruges. Fab for a day (or two) and only about 90mins or so from Calais

Would recommend Bruges if you have not been there before otherwise imho Ghent is better less touristy but you still get the big three - Beer, Chocolate & Canals.

Onto Bastogne for a very good museum and memorial to the Battle of the Bulge or via Hans Sur Less for the underground train & caves.

Calais - Brugges or Ypres - there are aires at both
Ypres to Bastogne - aire
Bastogne to Luxembourg - stayed at a site
Lux to Metz aire or municipal site
Metz to Colmar - aire
Colmar to Lucern - Site (Camping International)
We stayed a night in each place before moving on. We stayed 2 nights in Lucern.
Moved on to Italy via Gotthard Tunnel and onto Peschiera del Garda on site, although there is an aire.
Home via Brenner Pass to Innsbruck (site) and then into Germany - Fusen, taking part of Romantic Road home to Maastricht (all aires) then ferry.

Dinant is also worth visiting, municipal campsite about a mile out of town on the river. Luxembourg is also worthwhile where public transport is free!

Book a dentist appointment for when you get back as some of the Belgian roads are so bad that they will shake your teeth out.

Yes Dinant is on the itinerary, and I found the aire by the river 👍thankyou

My preferred route would be via Arras ( n-France) Luxembourg. Down the Mosel to Koblenz then go up the Rhine into the Black Forest past the Rhine falls into N-Switserland. Liestenstein, Austria and onwards.

Of course, fill up in Luxembourg cheapest on the route. We did this route in August via Lille as the autoroute is free then Maubeuge, Dinant then Luxemburg (avoids Charleroi). This autoroute passes a Space Museum that we always plan to visit but yet to see. We used the tunnel at St Marie aux Mines on the return trip to Nancy and Metz all free route except the tunnel.
Camp site near Boiry notre Dame was used on the return trip, we used the pool as it was 32deg C!

We're currently near Colmar and staying on winery pitches, all free as long as you sample/buy some wine. The one at the moment has all services including ehu.
The Alsace is wonderful and the towns really pretty.

Just came through Belgium to Saarburg and noticed the fridge and Alde display flashing red, the route through Belgium had tripped the gas protection valve that should only go if you have a crash☹️☹️
Definitely some bad potholes, reminds me of being in the UK😂😂

Yes we are.
Arrived yesterday afternoon and were lucky to have one of the 2 larger pitches along the back.
Plenty of normal size ones available but the actual site attached was full yesterday, bit strange as the Stelplatz we are on is more spread out and has river views!

Hello
For a stop over in Brugge, we recommend Camping Memling. It is a good camp site on outskirts of Brugge with good bus link to town and train station. We also used the train to visit Brussels and Gent for days out. Easier than moving the van!! If you are over 65, then there is a substantial discount on the train fare!! Delhaize and Carrfour supermarkets in walking distance to the camping. Also Alde and Lidl. Excellent bakery, St Paulus, but a good walk, but with a great choice of pastries and breads.
