I’ve been retired for 7 yrs now , retired at age 54 after 31 yrs Service , and last night had the most vivid dream that I had to go back to work , woke up in a cold sweat , anyone had similar n why do you think these things surface after so long ? Cheers !!

Seven year itch😉 and no, that would not be dream though more like a nightmare.

Edit oh you said nightmare in your title 👍

Yes, after 38 years of work and two years fully retired. Many reasons for it happening from thinking about work, seeing an old work colleague, right up to PTSD.

I’m in Spain on holiday without a care in the world and I had no traumatic episodes at all , some proper exciting ones but not traumatic! 💡

Me too, enjoying Italy at present. But still have them. I spent five years working next to a very good psychologist and she told me sometimes something as bizarre as a colour or smell could be a trigger. But who knows.

I’m afraid with me it’s a recurring nightmare. And as you say, very vivid.

When we packed up our every day work back in 2008 I struggled to come to terms with not going to work every day, I had no purpose or direction, I needed to be useful in some sort of roll.
Being 51 I had to do something as like your self I could not sleep ie dreaming I had to do something during the day to feel I had contributed to society.
retiring young is all well and good if your a person who likes to relax but it did not suit me,
All that said now at 65 I don’t want to much work 🤣

I used to run a big business. My rents and rates were horrendously expensive. Over £100,000 a year, paid quarterly in advance. Landlord was an absolute tyrant. Horrible man.

Luckily, I had a 5 year get out clause pug into the contract and left exactly 5 years after we went in.

I still wake up having had nightmares about the place

The essence of the dream was that I was returning to a workplace that I knew well but everything obviously in 7 yrs had changed and I remember in the dream screaming “ will someone just tell me what you want me to fooking do ? “
Also I appeared to be invisible apart from to my old boss ( I was second in command in my old life ) and to be honest my boss wasn’t useless.

It’s possible that you are feeling a bit stressed about something and that, if your work was stressful, it’s resurfacing in your dreams as a form of emotional continuity. It might be a stretch to extend that to suggest that, in general you’re enjoying a relaxed retirement and that a recent stressor has taken you back to your working life.

Interesting (if a little psychologisty paper) here https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/jsr.13674

I retired in 2000 at the age of 51 since then I haven't had time to think about the work I used to do, I'm too b****y busy doing all sorts of things. The phone is always ringing " John, when you've got a minute can you.....?"

Iv retired three times, 52 , 62, 72, god I wish I was 52 again, loved working but always had a job I liked doing.

We've had dreams like that but isn't it great when you wake up & realise you don't actually have to go to work!!!

I still wake up sweating about exams I passed about 30 years ago.

It’s such a relief when i properly wake up

Indeed , the sense of relief was palpable!
Many thanks for all your replies , your feed back has been very insightful 👍💡

Every night. But I DO have to go to work, and for many years yet.

I have a familiar dream where I’m back at university: I haven’t done enough work, there’s not enough time left to recover and I’m going to fail my course. I’ve had it for years (my finals were in 1980), I can even rationalise with myself whilst asleep that it all turned out ok and I have had a reasonable career as a chemist. Bizarre!

I admire those of you who could retire so early, well done.

I retired at 65, and have no desire to go back to working full time. I do a little bit of work each week, no pressure and enjoy the little I do but love the freedom to do what I want and when.

I don't envy the next generation who will have to work longer.

That's the joy of working after retirement, you can pick and choose what you do, it's great, no pressure, no s... Just do it, far better than sitting about.

Retired 5 years ago (54) due to health issues never did much for 2 years but cannot sit around and have built 4 houses since then but this last one nearly killed me so have packed in work again.
Saying that I get bored very easy and have to be kept busy especially through the winter as long dull days are not good for me☹️☹️

99% of dreams reflect the strongest emotion(s) of the previous day or two. Just watching the news can be traumatic enough to set off such a dream. Anything that caused you to think maybe you won't be able to afford to continue your current lifestyle could do it. Properly scary horror films are notorious for giving people bad dreams, but it might just as easily be something you 'brushed off' at the time.
