A Class Rapido 9097F
Exp
June 2016
After a bit of advice / assistance please.
Our cambelt needs changing in 6 months.
From what I can gather peeps tend to get charged £300-£500+
As ours is a Fiat Rapido A Class so I am expecting top end prices not bottom end as I know more work will be involved.
My local garage just told me not done it before on an A Class but can do it. Problem is not sure if engine needs to be dropped due to small space etc
So could be talking min 4 hrs max 12 hrs work.
At £45ph for labour which is reasonable.
£125 for belt kit and circa £50 for water pump (couldn't confirm exact price for pump as system playing up) could be talking thick end of £700.

For all you guys with an A Class engine can I ask how much you were charged for the job?

I live in Halifax West Yorkshire so if you are local ish (Bradford,Leeds, Huddersfield etc) a recommended garage would be grateful.

Thx

Get a price off a main dealer and a specialist garage that do Fiats.

Why would it cost more for an A class surely most of the Fiat chassis is still there?

Most of the work is done through the wheel arch is it not?

Bearing in mind I’ve not looked under an A class Fiat bonnet :)

I've just had mine done, albeit not an A Class as well as a service and I'm expecting a bill of between 400-500 notes.

an A class bonnet is more like a letter box

I know but most access for cambelts are via wheel arch especially on a ramp.

Or the ones I’ve done are :)

Had mine done last year just after purchase. 1998 2.5tdi fiat.ducato.A class B574
Gates belt and pulleys kit £78 +the dreaded (local motor factors) waterpump didn't warrant it ,huge mechanical lump working well
Labour on ramps ,and though wheel arch £160 ,mates rate .

Dave Newall (trade member on here) in Telford did our Ducato cambelt September last year. We travelled down from Glasgow to have it done albeit it was fitted into a 5-6 week trip for us. Good camp site across the road to stay before \ after and he throws in complementary tickets for local attraction within walking distance. There's a "Harvestery" type place a couple of minutes walk for a bite of lunch as well (standard pub grub!).
If he's closish by might be worth a call \ pm.

X244 is a lot easier & quicker than an x250 or x290 also parts are half the price & water pump is not driven by the cambelt on an x244.

If you trust your local garage go with them, and trust them to be honest with the price/hours. Last thing you want is someone rushing/bodging it as they’ve been pinned down on price.

Ahhh the joys of having chain drive Peugeot boxer:D

I own a garage and have just bought a A class carthago on fiat chassis had one of my technicians look at cambelt replacement just out of curiosity as room is limited
We have never done one but my technician said he thinks the best thing is remove the radiator this will give more room and should be ok to do in about 4 hrs total so bear this in mind when getting labour quotes

I to have a Carthago Aclass. I had the belts changed recently as a precaution. Once removed they were very badly perished.
My local guys removed the radiator and a lot of other parts in order to gain access. Apparently it was a sod of a job in mild fitters terms.

Dealer had mine done for me when I bought the van a few months back now and charged me £500.00

He paid....

Labour £220.00

Water pump 117.10
Antifreeze 8.00
__________
530.96
+ VAT 106.19
__________
Total £637.15

If that helps any.

PS on a Rapido A class.

Our latest motorhome is on a 2017 2ltr 160bhp Peugeot Boxer, does this have a chain or a belt?

Just look at the engine.
If it’s cam belt it will be protected by a plastic cover

Although not our Motorhome, I had a new cam belt, water pump and tensioner fitted to my diesel Zafira on Friday. Cost. £266 inc vat and parts.

I haven’t got one on my Merc A class but if I did I think a gynocologist would be the best person to it.

Another vote here for Dave Newell, I got mine done by 'my man' because I trust him, but later found out that Staffordshire Motorhomes who were doing it for me would have used Dave.. he does loads, don't entrust it to people who 'think' they will be able to do it. My man said he never wants to see me again LOL.

Hi had my Burstner a class cambelt and water pump changed full machincal service mot and damp check done at camper Uk back end of last year 14000 miles 2014 reg £1100

How many vans were done at that cost? Way overcharged

I had a chap who I have known for many years do my 2013 2.3 euro5 engine and he said never again it's a right pig of a job. The water pump took as long to do as getting to the cambelt.

After he’d done mine he said that to me as well!

And the x230 is even easier as you don't need to remove the offside engine mounting. 1998 would be x230.
