Hello all you Funsters - looking for some advice please. We have a 2006 Rapido 7099f (2.8 diesel).
I would like to replace the alternator with a high output unit. I can’t see the alternator model number so thats no help - I think the one fitted is the original from new. Has anyone done this. Look forward to hearing - thanks in advance - George

I think there should be a plate on it stating technical info and output, you'd need to find that first. You may already have one ?

Trouble is manufacturers use different alternators and out puts from different suppliers, so the only safe way is to read the make and speciation of the the alternator to guarantee what type and output is fitted,

When you have determined the make and output then you can look at using a larger output type,
But you realised it would usually be bigger physically with possible different connections and possibly different mountings, also pulley could be different so lots of checking first,

Thanks Figaro & Ivorantomy - I have been trying to research this for a couple of days now but can't narrow things down & what you say makes total sense. My garage suggested I do the research to avoid them having to remove the alternator just to see what is fitted - to be honest they weren't really interested - so I will have to go back to square one. Thanks for your input - George

If you want to increase the charge to your leisure batteries you could be better off fitting a B2B charger.

You could try an auto electric place, as alternators can be rewound to give more output.

Thought that on a previous thread you had installed a b2b charger for your lithium batteries..
What Is the thinking behind obtaining a bigger alternator. Just so folks can offer better advice.

i dont think a larger alternator is going to improve battery charging as most are minimum65 amp and i doubt your b2b is rated that high maybe you can say why your looking to uprate

I've never heard of high output alternator, but every day is a school day.
Not sure why you'd want one though, I find batteries stay charged perfectly in my old motorhome & I have no solar panels.

Hello & thank you funsters. Let me explain. We are well set up on our leisure battery side of things - we have 2 x 110 Victron lithium batteries - Victron battery charger / 2000w inverter - Sterling b 2 b - 2 solar panels. So we have a vulgar amount of power - it's a great set up & we really use it (cooking with induction hobs - slow cooker - halogen oven - charging 2 electric bikes tele & lights etc etc). We try to stay off hook up. We have no problems with the system (thanks VanBitz). The only reason we are looking into the alternator upgrade is that we are probably going to spend a lot of time in UK instead of seeking the sun in Spain & Portugal so our solar will not be as efficient as we are used to. Having tried to source what I would like along with some of your feed back I have decided to have a season with my current set up & then decide if I need to alter it. On reflection probably don't need the expense or the extra amps. So thank you all. All the best Nikki & George.

If the output of your Sterling B2B is 60A, I'd agree with your quote above. (y)

Our power set up for off grid, is more or less the same as yours, but you have the advantage of quick charging Lithium batteries, compared to our sealed Lead Acid batteries.

Enjoy your UK touring, which will be a good test for your setup.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

My 2001 Pilote 2.8hdi has a 120amp alternator, it is labelled as such. Would you consider that a low, normal or hi output. It does have an aftermarket aircon system fitted fifteen years or so ago by a previous owner so if it is a hi output unit may have been fitted then.

Is there a way to fit a second alternator?

No idea if possible but I wonder if adventure converters fit them for redundancy??

quick look on ebay seems to suggest the alternators are 140 or 150 amp so i would think thats plenty

We have 2 x 100 Transporter Lithium batteries on our 2019 Burstner (Fiat 2300, 150 hp) if the batteries are at 50% we get app 85 amps at 1500 rpm think it is a 120 amp alternator. Fiat 4000 kg heavy chassis. Too higher charge rate can shorten the life of you batteries.
